The Alekhines defence used to be my main weapon vs. e4, but nowadays I am playing the Portugese and Icelandic gambits more often.
what opening do you prefer for black against 1.E4

1 e4 e5 is most solid for beginners and World Champions alike
Incorrect
"Solid" has a definition in chess - it cannot just be used as a synonym for "good". A solid position is one that is sound, safe from attack, and free from weaknesses. Of course openings are what the player makes of them, and openings with a solid reputation can lead to wild positions and vice versa, but in general, it is more or less factually incorrect to call 1...e5 the "most solid". It is certainly the Caro-Kann defence which is the most solid reply to e4.

Right now the 2 best players of the planet playing their most important event rely on 1 e4 e5.
Let us see if one of them risks a Caro-Kann.

That doesn't adress my post, you still don't seem to understand what "solid" means. If you want to argue that 1...e5 is the most theoretically correct response to e4, then I wouldn't argue with you. But it is just plain false to say it's the most solid, because it isn't. The WCC you reference is perfect proof of this, you can hardly call the imbalanced positions Magnus has been getting as black vs Ian's Ruy Lopez to be "solid". "Dynamic" would be a more accurate description.

"The French Defence. In my younger years I used to consider it at best a second-rate opening, and I once even lost a bet with one of my friends, and as a result had to play 1... e6 in all my games with Black in a Super-GM tournament. Fortunately my friend was greedy, and took money instead. I believe that both 1...c5 and 1...e5! are better choices" - Carlsen

It is not about what is theoretically better, it is about what offers the best practical chances in the most important match against the strongest opponent.

Ugh... is this @Kindaspongey's new account or something? I can't tell whether i'm talking to a robot or a really boring, ignorant human.
how many of u play the alekhine's defense more frequently?
