the two standard responses are d5 or Nf6. but c5 is also an option. it branches out from there into unique and different games.

go nuts!

I have NEVER had this much fun playing black EVER and get 2:1 win stats! if you're not an aggressive attacker, it STARTS OUT 2 points down, but I love just how OPEN and MOBILE it is with lots of trappy potential. that's why my opponent played Qe1 in this game. he knew that Bxf3 & Bxh2+ were coming to snag his queen which happens A LOT in this line

yes, I totally choked the ending having imagined Rxf1 as an "impossibility". otherwise, even WITHOUT the queen to attack on d1, the open mobility gave me all the counterplay I needed

I can't imagine ever playing anything else, but then again, I quit playing over the stonewall straightjacket and 110% refuse to play fianchettos, so this is pretty much the ONLY tactical solution for me, and it's PERFECT... for me

the h file pawn push is another common theme. I like that this line is more of a tactical trappy toolbox than positional voodoo yawns

Dumbluck626

I mean at your level and just a little above, these should work more often than they deserve to.

Dumbluck626

This is (more or less) what I play against everything

I hate either side of a fianchetto myself. that's why I live my new gambit so much. for "sound" openings, it seems like EVERY aggressive line against 1.d4 involves fianchettos.

i hate it when i'm FORCED to fianchetto to castle out of danger. i'd never do it on purpose

the hartlaub charlick has better stats than the albin (which I was DESPERATE to play for DECADES, but couldn't find anything that didn't involve a fianchetto to complete my repertoire) and as a NICE bonus, when white declines the englund gambit with 2.c4, 2...d4, and there you are, right in the albin. I love that that is a SIDELINE in my favorite line. i doubt I'd get 2:1 win rates with the albin as everyone's stats are weak in it.

ALBIN 1600-2000 stats favor white slightly:

ENGLUND HARTLAUB/CHARLICK stats:

MY stats are WAY above average in it

I knew I loved this line just watching chess academy's video. It TOTALLY speaks my language with simple POWERFUL easy to remember attacks in the main lines. 34:66 is my stat after 2...d6 too

even when players surprise me, I generally have plenty of time and MOBILITY (very very very important TO ME) to regroup and find something else to attack, or at least increase the pressure. It's the closest thing to 1.e4 as black that i know of

adityasaxena4

This is what I play against 1.d4

maybe 5...c6 before the 6...d5 push

adityasaxena4

This is also one of my lines against d4. This is known as the Franco-Benoni Defence

If your does pawn d4 I think you should do knight c6 as this threaten the d4 pawn and also defend the e5

In the GLORIOUS year of 1776 The United States declared independence from ENGLAND.... We VOWED to never have any MONARCHY....................................................... But there is a KING AND QUEEN in chess. And all the pawns NEED to SACRIFICE themself to protect the ROYAL family.

This is obviously refrencing how the Brits were FORCING us to be in their COLONIES,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if chess.com wanted to be more DEMOCRATIC then we would have THE FIRST LADY AND PRESIDENT. Le'ts change the Knights to the secret service and the Rooks to homeland security. also, the president will need to become a pawn and make another pawn the president every 4 moves. The president and the first lady also need to protect the pawns (Now called civillians) because inthe US CONSTITUTION, it says that the president needs to PROTECT the citizens.

As a free american i am very world about the authoritarian chess regime and I would like it to meet the UN standards of a democracy, i.e all pawns are played by different people because people are INDIVIDUAL citizens with THE ABILITY TO MAKE CHOICES............................................................I hope u fix the game or atleast add it as a gamemode.... all of american chess players are dissapointed...

Hi! I would normally recommend for beginners 1...d5 as main defense. Since you are already close to 1100 (intermediate) then I would suggest you to pick a 1...Nf6 defense depending your play style. For instance if you are an attacking player then you may chose the King´s Indian, or if you are a positional player then the Queen´s Indian could be for you.

Good luck!

reyaanshshah

Ruin there life with kings indian defense

theoretical overload?

I would think at the 1100 level, theory isn't really even a thing

1050 blitz? Your choice won’t matter.
What do you play against e4?

If e5: Nf6 and try for NID and QGD against anti-Nimzo and Catalan.
If e6: e6 and play for the e6 Dutch or the Tarrasch.
If c5: Nf6 and play the KID or Grunfeld.
If c6: c6 and play the Slav.
If d5: d5 and play for the QGA.
If d6/g6: d6/g6 and play the same as you would against e4.
