e4 gives me central control of the game.

but after that i have difficulty making my next move.

what should i take note of? any pointers? i really realy suck at chess and want to get better

It depends on what your opponent plays, but a standard move would be 2.Nf3

If for example black replies with e6 (French Defence) you could play d4, to gain more control of the centre. First move a pawn or two, then generally move your knights before bishops and plan to castle.

Just learn openings like the ruy lopez:

e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 Bb5 a6 Ba4 Nf6 0-0 Be7 Re1 b5 Bb3 0-0 c3 ...

um... remember to develop pieces, move them off the back rank into active positions in the game, don't move pieces twice unless they are threatened so you will have the time to develop more pieces, don't move more than 3 pawns in the opening, more than that and you are not making progress but only weakening your position, whenever possible, castle! in order to give the king a safe spot away from the centre, then just develop more pieces, once you have developed the pieces (light pieces: knights and bishops) you can move the queen out in order to connect the rooks (it's not good to expose your queen too early in the game, of course you can try to castle queenside instead of kingside, but it's a more risky choice at times), after you have moved your queen out move the rooks to the open file\s, double them on one file if only one is open.

if you have been able to do all of this try to seek offensive opportunities, tactics, attacks, sacrifices etc.

remember, even very early on in the game you might face trouble if you just folow these guide lines blindly, always search for tactics, defensive and offensive. also remember not to neglect these rules, as you will get crushed if you do for too long. after some time you will develop a sense for when it's good to move a piec e twice and when it's bad, when it's good to castle and when castling can be delayed etc.

if you want to study a certain opening I would reccomend you to look for the first few moves of the "Italian opening", and folow the guidelines from there.

if you are faced with an unfamilier move in the opening, just remember these main guide lines.

After e4 and e5 some good choices include Nf3, Nc3, Bb5, and d4.

studying pricipled openings isn't what you whould do yet, you asked what to do, do whatever you like, try to folow the opening guidelines so you won't get crushed and search for tactics.

don't play opening moves if you don't understnad them, first try to understnad the opening by understanding the importance of developing pieces, castling early, not exposing your queen etc. then you can learn a move order of a certain opening that you seem to like.

Develop all your pieces towards the center of the board, castle, and develop a plan afterwards

thanks for all the replies guys

by center, do u guys mean that i have to position my pieces in the center or have their line of sight in the center?

edit: and alsoi heard that it was a bad idea to expose the queen earlier on the game, is that true? and whats the recommended piece that i should have priority when playing?
