If he plays a different move than what you expected, you're in a fresh situation and need to find out what the best move is. Your knowledge of the opening helps, but it's a new situation -- sometimes the difference is very important, sometimes it isn't.
I don't think you should think of seperate "opening mode" and "tactic mode".
