i often play 2. d6. but it isnt very good. i think its better the Nf6.

and i never play (and you shouldnt play too) the king's bishop's pawn. it weaks the defense

albatrosinus

These are the best answers to 2... Nc6.

albatrosinus

No, no, no, Nc6 is better than Nf6

albatrosinus

Arkhimeedes... really? You really play f5 after the Ruy Lopez AND the Giuoco Piano? Why not the Latvian Gambit? or the Fred?

albatrosinus

The only case I play f5 is in such positions...

yes i like it more too. and another problem a lot of player have with Nf6 is that:

AKJett

3...d6! 4.Nf3 Nxe4 and black is already equal, and will have the better winning chances if both players are beginners

No 2... d6 is actually fairly good. It all depends what you play after it.

Because if you decide (at the third move) to pin the King's Knight with your Queen's Bishop... It's not a good idea.

I can give you an example : http://www.chess.com/games/view?id=765

In the Ruy Lopez 3..f5 is very respected and good (the Jänisch gambit) and has been played by the best players including Anand. It is a very solid openning.

albatrosinus

1... e5 is a good move.

Actually there is even better : there is 1... c5, the Sicilian.

But if you play it, you mustn't be afraid of learning a lot of opening theory and variations... and you must sometimes deal with Anti-Sicilian lines (Closed, Smith-Morra, Alapin)... That's why I often play 1... e5 (and an anti-Sicilian)

albatrosinus

I know... and the beginner who plays exf5 will be in serious trouble...

But I think it is less safe than 3... a6
