My idea was that if you happen to exchange for another piece a bishop that you fianchettoed to g2, then the move of g3 would not be compensated with the protection of the f1 bishop. And a king castled on the kingside that has a fianchettoed position without the actual bishop would be vulnerable. Hopefully, c4 would not rule out queenside castling necessarily in that case ...
... by the way, from something I alluded to in the preceeding paragraph, is it really generally suboptimal to exchange one's bishop for a knight?
