well if you play it RIGHT it works !
Why you should NEVER play the Barnes defense!

If you want to take the risk that white won't move to h5 on the their second move go ahead. A lot of openings work if one's opponent doesn't make obvious moves to refute them.
1. e4 f6 2. Qh5 g6 3. Be2 e5 is rated -0.5 on stockfish and it is obvious that taking the queen is a blunder

There is a very powerful variation of the barnes though.
Fried Fox Defense is the name im pretty sure. Looks sound to me lol

This is the Old Trolls in New Suits defense.
What did they even say?

just dont take the queen and youll be completly fine , play pawn e5
okay. I learnt something new.

I started a seven day game. I woke up the next day with a hangover and I played f6. Not the worst decision I've made on a big night, but still.
You may or may not have heard of the Barnes defense. The basic line is when white plays 1.e4 and black responds with f6. The diagram above shows a cheeky trap that works and gets mate in 4. If white is a low-rated beginner, they will almost always fall for it. This set-up usually does not happen because 1. the Barnes defense is usually an uncommon way or responding to e4 2. Even if black plays Barnes defense, white is not likely to move their queen to h5. There are many ways to respond to the Barnes defense as white but i think 2.d4 is probably the best.
