In addition to just becoming the youngest USCF Master, he also was previously the youngest USCF Expert, and the youngest person to beat a GM, and had held the 8 year old World Champion title.
Awonder Liang becomes youngest USCF Master in chess history

Funny, how some on here don't believe in talent.
No, see, he studied every day. All those 10 year olds who are only lowly class A players and Experts obviously didn't bother to even try. We can all be 9 year old masters if just get off our lazy butts.

Well, I hate to rain on your parade...but it looks like we have a bit of disagreement here, since according to this link little Sammy still seems to hold the record:

(Btw how do they even figure this stuff? In the bad old days we had to wait 3-4 months after an event before we got our new ratings.)

Have they even been alive for 10000 hours?

Oops. Ok new bar has been set. Sammy was the one who worked hard. Awonder did ok (probably read half a book or something), but was mostly lazy like the rest of us.

A little baby named Awonder is cute.
A 40 year old man named Awonder because his parents weren't too far thinking is... not nearly as cute.

Yeah, Awonder preferred to get a life...and now look where that's gotten him.

Also the youngest to beat an IM.

Crosstable data is NOT SHOWN in tiebreak order and does not reflect If Samuel was USCF rated above 2000 on December 4th he would have acheived 2000 earlier than Awonder. But the USCF rating for this event is officially 2182. So it looks to me like Awonder will officially hold the record. |

I was just forwarded the following.
Hi Mike and all fellow Wisconsin chess lovers,
I think that most of you are probably asleep right now. But I would like to share with you that little Awonder has just become our great nation's youngest ever chess master. The old record was established by Samuel Sevian of California under the old rating system. His record was 7 days before his 10th birthday. Awonder's new record has been created under the new rating system which has been engineered to slow down rating progress by a half. So presumably twice as hard to break the record now (please check this and make correction for me if necessary, Mike). But with all the support from all of you, morally and financially, little Awonder has just done that. Awonder's new record is 17 days before his 10th birthday. When Samuel Sevian made the record, all the major news networks had been reporting the news.
We are still in the tournament side, Dayton, Ohio. Awonder played the first two rounds in the Midwest Open Team Chess Festival earlier in the day (March 23, 2013) and was 2-0. After beating an 1794 opponent in round 1, Awonder defeated the very strong Original Life Master Benjamin Weaver (current USCF rating 2296) from Ohio in round 2. This will raise Awonder's estimated USCF rating to 2207. I have taken over Awonder's spot on the team from round 3. I just finished my game of round 3.
Awonder could not have done this without your gracious support. Thank you!
Best regards,
Awonder, Adream and Will, from Dayton, Ohio
