Wow that is interesting!  How did you come across this letter?

"..your little chess-playing boy.."  -  aww that's sweet.

It's very likely that Fischer's farther was Paul Nemenyi.  And Joan's father was indeed Hans-Gerhardt Fischer.  Note that Joan was five years older than Bobby.

Indeed - look at the picture of Paul Nemenyi in the link above and make up your own mind...

Reminds me of a recent news story I saw which suggested Frank Sinatra "might" be the father of Mia Farrow's son Ronan - and not Woody Allen:

Here's what I can tell you about Joan. When Bobby left the country to play a rematch in Bolgaria. The Justice Dept had an embargo on that country. By playing there, Bobby was in violation of that. When he won, it was Joan who helped him set up a swiss bank account so that he could have access to his money from Iceland.

Did you just make that all up?

That info is in the following 2 books;  End Game by Frank Brady,  @2012 from Broadway publishers,  and  Bobby Fischer Goes To War by David Edmonds & John Eidinow @ 2005 by Harper Collins publisher. BTW; I'm from Starfleet Academy. We don't lie.

Deirdre, post 21 : this letter is published in the very good book "The even more complete Chess Addict" by  Mike Fox and Richard James, page 102.

The date and address you know already, and the complete text is as follws.

Dear Madam: your postcard of Nov. 14th, mislaid in The Eagle Office, has just reached me.

If you can bring your little chess-playing boy to the Brooklyn Public Library, Grand Army Plaza, next Wednesday evening at eight o'clock, he might find someone there about his own age.    If he should care to take a board and play against Mr. Pavey, who is to give an exhibition of simultanious play at that time, just have him bring along his own set of chessmen with which to play.    The boards, I understand, are to be provided.

I will also bring your request to the attention of Mr. Henry Spinner, secretary of the Brooklyn Chess Club, which meets Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings on the third floor of the Brooklyn Academy of Music.  It is quite possible that Mr. Spinner may know a boy or two of that age.

Yours respectfully, H. Helms, Chess Editor.

I thought it is good to let everybody know this text, my print in this forum is not easy to read...

I think it's fairly well established that Bobby and Joan had different biological fathers, both of whom were scientists. Their mother, Regina Wender Fischer, was also a very brilliant--and very difficult, person, who spoke many languages and eventually obtained both an M.D. and a Ph.D. Being five years older than her brother, Joan was somewhat of a second mother to the young Bobby, and they seem to have loved each other all their lives.

Indeed Regina (Bobby's mother) by most accounts she too was a very intelligent person who appears to have been academically gifted.

I'm glad that someone on this thread referred to the closeness between Bobby and his sister Joan. She seemed to be very protective of Bobby.

I think that there is a good story to be told about Joan's role in Bobby's life.

How about that big Kardashian gal, Chloe? She's twice the size of her sister Kim and that other one who's always pumping out another kid. No way they have the same father. I bet the rumors are true that OJ's really her dad. They should do a DNA test and put it on Springer! What do you think?

The country was Yugoslavia & it was the US Treasury Department that sent the letter to Fischer, warning him of UN sanctions.

RonaldJosephCote

Your right about the country. I apologize. My mind is mush, but Treasury falls under DOJ. Treasury sent it, DOJ prepared it, and it would have been the IRS who inforced it, had he returned.

Is that really a rumor? It sounds like the kind of thing i would have made up. Maybe I started it and forgot, and now...I get fooled by my own rumor.

God, you DO listen to too much Pink Floyd!

It's impossible to listen to too muh Pink Floyd.

You're right there.  Cosmic bliss.

Bobby was well into music, i bet he listened to Pink Floyd. Cool

There were times, when hunkered over a tournament board, he'd be toe-tapping (see footage (pardon the pun) archives). Once, following a game, a reporter asked, "Bobby ! What type of music do you like ?"....He said, "I like the Big Beat"....abruptly ending the post-game interview, walking away, bobbing his head, finger-snapping, etc....True Story !....

sorry, unfortunately American Government is the Social Studies class I take two years from now so I am sadly misinformed on the ways of the US government x) I just know some Bobby Fischer info from my research for my National History Day project ( a national competition- I only just made it past regionals and I'll be going to New York State History Day, and if I pass that, I'm going to Nationals ).

RonaldJosephCote

No need to apologize. The trick to getting government to work is knowing which door to knock on. I'm wrong myself on several occasions over several issues. Good luck with your competition.  A lot of government worked one set way befor 9-11. Post 9-11 a lot of changes.
