Chess: A detailed look

SIX YEARS LATER EDIT: I was an idiot then. Have fun laughing.

Chess is a game where there is a board of squares with 16 little pieces for each side aranged like

.

We move the pieces like this: A bishop moves diagnoly; A knight moves in the shape of an l and can jump over peices; A rook can move verticaly and horizontaly; A queen can move like a bishop and rook; A king can move like the queen except can only move one square at a time; A pawn moves one square forward, two on the first move, captures one square diagnoly forward and can turn into any other chess piece except a king or pawn when it reaches the other side of the board. When your king is threatened it is check. If there is no way to escape the check then it is called checkmate and the game is over. Frown

18?

I have been following yitzd's posts today. I don't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for him. I really hope he is a clever troll.

Good stuff. Thanks for showing that must know mating pattern at the end! Keep up the good work.

I have seen that mate in a tournament game!

We have all been there, I don't think we should criticize yitzd to much.

There are 32 pieces not 16.

 I feel the same.

Thanks again, yitzd!

I'm so glad for this post.  Now I understand what I'm doing here.  But please explain how we jump our opponent's pieces and how we get kinged?

Horsie-mans can jump like an L. When a pawn reaches the other end it can be a queen not a king. Multiple kings is called a hostile takeover. How do you think the game started? Multiple queens is okay because kings have needs.

Pat_Zerr

So when the horsey man jumps your piece, then it gets taken off the board, then if the horsey makes it to your side of the board, it gets kinged and can jump in any direction?

No, the knights (as they are properly called) always move in that L-shaped direction. It can move backwards. It doesn't capture pieces it jumps but pieces it lands on. Knights can't promote. This isn't Checkers. Only one king is allowed on each side, and if it's lost, so is the game.

Enlighten me, please.

How does one "lose" a king?

goldendog

It seems to me that if anything jumps into or over the king that the king should be lost.

You can't. But if you're in checkmate, where any move gets your king taken next move, you lose because your king will be lost.

As Tartakower observed, knights don't jump.  They limp.

There are 16 pieces for each side.

But not 16 TOTAL, as you imply with your post.

You mean I should have to write 16 little pieces for each side? OK.
