I feel like Ivanchuk had a very dynamic playing style. It can get you a win against Carlsen or some world champion, but to maintain that requires solidity, because to be a top-5 player, you have to maintain solidity and consistent wins against those players. Just my opinion, I could be wrong too!
Did Ivanchuk play too much to win?

Ivanchuck is famously reliant on his mental state. He has dominated the best of the best on his good days, and lost to 2600 rated players on not so good days. Not only is he likely the strongest player to never become world champ, he is likely stronger than many world champions themselves. At his best, he is likely better Kasparov, Fischer, maybe even Magnus.

Ivanchuk is supposedly the best player never to be world champion. He has beat every world champ since Bobby Fischer, but his nerves or mood swings sometimes seem to get the better of him, and his chess game suffers.
I read somewhere that he was playing a huge number of rated games per year, competing in far more tournaments than other professionals. (If that isn't true, sorry, and never mind.)
So I got to thinking: some people think Ivanchuk's weakness is stamina. But maybe he's demanding far more stamina of himself than other players do. Or at least, maybe he did in his prime. I don't know if he still plays a ton of games.
Would Ivanchuk have been #1 if he had paced himself? He frequently runs out of time on the board. Did he also mismanage his time as a long-term contender?
