Today I played against a player, whose name I shall not mention here, 10/10 unrated, and apparently because he found himself in a losing position, he said, "I have to disconnect now" and then disconnected, without resigning.

The most comical part of this was that the game was unrated!  So yes, he intentionally disconnected just out of spite.  I mean, it's not okay to disconnect abruptly from a game on purpose (he said, "I have to go now, so I'm disconnecting"), rated or otherwise.  If you're having internet problems, that is one thing.  But doing it on purpose is quite another.

The great majority of the people I play with on here are well-mannered and behave like adults.  Course, one or two bad elements can slip their way into any organization.

I wonder if we could have a "report abuse" feature added to player profiles so that we can alert site management to problem players.

Many variations of this idea have been floated, but it's always the same hitches: 1. People's idea of what abuse is varies a lot 2. The "problem players" would be the quickest to use this  feature on you and everybody else.

" he said, "I have to disconnect now" and then disconnected, without resigning."

At least he had the good grace to tell you he was leaving, many just abandon without a word. Isn't it possible that he just had to disconnect? Maybe his wife had called him for dinner, or his Mother had insisted he get off the computer and complete his homework, maybe the hour he had paid for at the Internet cafe was about to expire. Any number of innocent reasons might be responsible for his disconnection. Lucky your proposed system doesn't exist as I get the feeling you would have given him a black mark. Chill out dude, he warned you and you won, receiving exactly the same increase in rating as any other type of win.

Regardless of his reasoning, he should have simply hit "resign" in order to end the game.  Now, that's clear enough, isn't it?

Yes, I have to agree, it's certainly how I do things. When I posted I was under the mistaken impression that closing the browser was the same as resigning, now I see that in LiveChess2 this decision leaves you hanging for a minute or so. Perhaps your opponent was also under the same mistaken impression, who knows? Certainly you've spent far more time posting all this than you had to wait for the points. Anyway, my apologies if you feel you've been slighted in some way.

No problem.  I accept your apology.

I have played live chess games before (not on here) where opponent has disconnected and i have had to sit and wait for 30 minutes for the game to time out in order to win!

Happened to me aswell. A higher rated player was realizing he was loosing, then he told me "I've got to go" and disconnected. Really annoying, and it was obvious he did this on purpose. It's sad there is no solution to this kind of behavior. Some solution should be implemented.
