I'm raged like 1300. You are saying that if I do well at a FIDE chess tournament I can go from 1300 to a titled player, just after one tournament?

The thing is that you would never get to such a tournament with a 1300 rating. The players in such a tournament would be much higher.

CM = Candidate Master. 2000-2199 USCF. USCF promoted this title years ago instead of Expert, but it never caught on.

FM = FIDE Master. Honorary title given masters for scoring well per FIDE guidelines . For me, back in the 80's, I had to score over 60% against title players in three separate events, facing a minimum of titled player in each event. The events had to be within a couple years. I played in a couple round robin events in Minneapolis, and I played in two Midwest Masters in Chicago.

IM = International Master. Same as FM but the performance requirements are tougher. (I have an ICCF IM title where I had to score well but in correspondence chess. Somewhat the same.)

GM = Grandmaster. Requires a higher rating (> 2400 maybe >2450) and with yet even tougher performance requirements.

Larry Kaufman got his GM title by winning the World Senior Chess Championship, so there are exceptions in how one can obtain a title. But usually it takes playing in several events of the right type, and then scoring well.

CM is 2200 fide xD uscf titles are fake.

Getting titles is completly free and only takes skill. That guys is trolling and mods refuses to stop him.

blasterdragon

So aparently OP suceeded rather fast in getting CM

Pulpofeira

That's not funny, many people is having a tough time in Europe. About titled players, according to GM de la Villa a +2400 player can easily earn more than 2000 euros/month in Spain if he/she is pretty active.

madhacker

Just noticed that this thread is 3 years old, and the OP is now indeed titled. Fair play to him.

thechessatic

I would rather earn my title thats for sure.

Conflagration_Planet

Lol!

Just play in FIDE rated tournaments and work your way up in the ratings with wins. The tournaments are very tough almost like the martial arts "36 Chambers of Shaolin" movie because almost everybody in such tourneys play for the same reason as you - to gain rating for which you have to beat rated players!

So, there is no scope for lack of focus, flippant players.

TurdStoneFromTheSun

You put a "GM" jpg as your chess.com avatar, done.

CM stands for Con Man :)

RileyFenz

Chess.com doesn't issue titles themselves - all they do is recognise the titles awarded by other organisations, like FIDE or the national associations like USCF. Titled players get other benefits too, but they need to prove their identity to Chess.com - see https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/articles/1444932

Here's a link to Canadian Chess Clubs.  Here's hoping you're near one.
