20 minutes is actually still really rapid for OTB. Classical controls give each player two hours for forty moves, an extra hour for the next twenty, then a final hour to finish. Nowadays there's usually some variation on this, but three to four hours for a game is pretty normal at high levels. At lower levels, not so much. I generally end up playing G/30 OTB because it's what's around, but I prefer G/45, G/60, or hopefully G/75 as around optimal for me. I think I'd get a bit restless after that, but I've never actually played with such a limit.
Dear friends,
What do you think is an ideal time limit to do the following:
a. Not win the game due to other's stupid mistakes/errors/basic oversight.
b. Time to display ones chess playing knowledge/skills; strategy and tactics learned.
c. I see a lot of players playing blitz games of a minute or two; but if you look at the games; there is not much display of chess playing skills; rather you see SPEED and winning on the opponents stupid errors or winning on time!
d. According to me Chess is a thinking game and not a speed game; this does not mean sitting on the board for hours for a single move; but I do think that SOME moves make you think a bit longer than just the opening moves! For this you should have adequate time!
I think that an ideal time limit for a live chess would be 20 minutes!
What do you think?
