I started watching some poker in 2017. I love Negreanu, and it makes me excited for Pogchamps.
If it were just total beginners, he might be a heavy favorite, but I'm not sure... who else is playing? In chess experience counts for a lot.

His account's been open since 2018 and he's played a few thousand games.
Interesting.

If they seed correctly, the final will be Sardoche vs Negreanu. This wildcard Michelle Khare is seriously natural at the game it seems, based on her interaction and speed of noticing traps and forks in lessons with GothamChess.

He has played a lot on other websites btw, he trained on Kasparov's masterclass course. Don't judge solely on his chess.com rating.

Oh I see, you're right. According to this they're the top two seeds.

Even more interesting to me now.

I am telling you Khare is on another level, she has only taken Chess remotely serious in the past month and is playing like this in some games. If she doesn't happen to blunder hard, she may genuinely win the whole thing.

I just now looked at the game. Yeah, a number of things make it impressive to me. Obviously the stronger your opponent the more you'll blunder, but for example even after queening she wasn't playing check, check, check the way most beginners would, and then she used an advanced (for a beginner) mating pattern with the queen and rook.
So yeah, very good.
He didn't do very well in the first pogchamps IIRC... like... he did really badly.
Negreanu is a joke. In an actual match like the one against Polk he is getting smashed hard and it seems he's been on the lucky side so far.
I follow professional poker as much as I can. Are there any other poker players on this site?
I play poker but this is not my username elsewhere and I like to keep my accounts separate.

Proven wrong already. DN! DN!

He actually has skill in something unlike these idiots whose skill is nothing more than taking a shower and turning on a webcam.
If he took it seriously for a month he'd be better than everyone in pogchamps who doesn't have a year's worth of experience.

I was merely disputing his poker abilities. Him beating some sub1k elo chess player is nothing impressive.

You mean at poker? You think Negreanu is bad at poker?! LOL!

Negreanu isn't a bad poker player by any stretch, but he's not world class at this point (maybe he was at live holdem tournaments 10-20 years ago) and massively, massively overrated by the general public. He happened to be in the right place at the right time back in 2003 when poker blew up and he took full advantage of his opportunities. He had an image as an enthusiastic kid in a sea of weirdo degenerates and old cranks and was already even back then building an online brand and he's done a wonderful job of building on that and making a living from it.
I see a lot of parallels between tournament Poker and Chess but that's not all. Negreanu is the only one of the streamers who has a skillset linked to both calculating under time pressure and perceiving a situation like the enemy does. The types of games that the other streamers excel at (in Logic's case it was rapping, not gaming) do not rely heavily on the brain's capacity to plan and calculate on top of mastering the opponents' perception. In the lessons with Hikaru and GothamChess, I have seen Negreanu show extreme enthusiasm, not just aptitude, for the game. I wholeheartedly believe he is going to win and I support him on this endeavour.
