Is Aronian overrated

You are right about Aronian ..he is living proof that there has been great inflation in fide ratings..Aronian would not be in the top 100 players of all time but look at his rating..ridiculous.

Even though Aronian's position was favoured by the engines he clearly didn't understand it to let it slip so easily. So in his mind he was never beating Carlsen in the first place. How pathetic of him to not even hold the game to a draw but to get completely outplayed. He just doesn't have what it takes to be a RIVAL to Carlsen. Not enough mental strength seeing how he collapses in important tournaments like the candidates and not enough killer instinct to fight on for the win. The real rivals are the upcoming young players year such as Caruana who is very close to overtaking Aronian in the rating list.

Aronian passed 30 years old. To think he is a rival to Magnus Carlsen who hasn't even peaked yet??? Blasphemy. I'm tired of him being overhyped. Caruana's almost on an even score with Carlsen. This is Carlsen' real future rival. Not some let down like Aronian who will soon be forgotten.

No he earned his rating.  Aronian in any other time would be heralded as a great prodigy or the Morphy of the generation and may even obtain a plus score against Fischer in his prime if time travel were real, but this isn't an ordinary chess decade so he's overshadowed by Carlsen. 

Aronian obtain a plus score against Fischer..have you been on the waccy baccy..Aronian is not even fit to carry Bobby's chessboard let alone think about beating him... give me a break.

Not true... Carlsen's classical score against Aronian is 8-4 according to wikipedia. Should be 9-4 after his win in norway chess.

If you read that you must have seen the GMs Aronian has a plus on

Karpov, Adams, Anand, Gelfand, Rabajov, CARUANA, Shirov, Bacrot...

Look on chessDB that is the official chess games record. This score is from a single tournament. They already beat each other in tournaments. Carlsen have some advantage against him, as a player, but that's all...

I mean +8-4=27. They played a total of 39 classical (40 after norway chess) games against each other. Rapid and blitz is not counted.

I thought you was including rapid and blitz too... yes, Carlsen have more wins in classical against him. 

Let's see how Levon does in less than month when he and Magnus will play in the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis.  

Aronian is pretty good, but something should be done about his rating!

Aronian has earned his rating, through competing against the best grandmasters the world has to offer.

He has been ranked in the top 3 for as long as I can remember. That doesn't happen on accident.

He may not be #1, but would trade my chess skills for his anyday.

It's not a question of comparing Aronian's skills with patzers like you and me and countless others on this site , it is about appraising Aronian's skills compared with the greats of the game both current and past... Aronian is  a player who has played consistently well in a lot of tournaments over the years , that is why he has a load of rating points but when you put him in a candidates tournament he never performs and at his age it is beginning to look as if he never will. The guy just doen't have the heart at the very highest level... some joker said earlier in the thread that Aronian would have a plus score against Bobby Fischer..that is the biggest joke you will ever hear!.

trotters64 Bobby Fischer is a joke. In todays world Bobby Fischer in his prime would be just another 2700 GM, very very strong, but not winning tounaments by +14. Carlsen would squish him like a bug, (as he does almost everyone EXCEPT Levon Aronian and Fabiano Caruana). There is only one person in history who i think would have a better then even shot at beating magnus, that is Garry Kasparov. Next world chapionship match i hope that Caruana/Aronian play, I mean Anand is a worthy player, but as we saw last year, he just can't beat this monster from norway.

Given Fischers memory, cast him into the modern computerised age and his capacity would give many current GMs the shivers.
