Official Chess Master Titles

Lots of people get confused and curious on how to earn a chess title.

You may also have interests on the history, how it's awarded and so on...

If so though this is the thread for you.

World Champion:

Required Rating: World's Highest

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: This title is awarded to a chess player (usually a Grandmaster with a rating 2700+) who has managed to defeat the previous World Champion in 12 games of chess or awarded to the second highest-rated player as the previous Champion did not defend his title.

Women's World Champion:

Required Rating: World's Highest Female Player

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: This title is awarded to a female chess player (usually a Women's Grandmaster) who has managed to defeat the previous Women's World Champion, become the highest rated female player or been the second-highest rated player as the current Champion did not bother to defend their title.

Grandmaster (GM):

Required Ratings: 2500+ (FIDE Rating), 2600+ (Tournament Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: To become a Grandmaster you will first need to meet the required ratings, then achieve at least two Grandmaster results in 27 games. In practice you will need to achieve at least three Grandmaster Results / norms. Players with an ELO Rating of over 2700 have been considered as 'Super-Grandmasters'. For example: Magnus Carlsen (World Chess Champion)

Women's Grandmaster (WGM):

Required Ratings: 2300+ (FIDE Rating), 2600+ (Tournament Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: To become a Women's Grandmaster you will need to meet the same requirements as a male Grandmaster except with a lower FIDE rating. The winner of the World Girls Junior Chess Championship is automatically awarded the Women's Grandmaster title.

International Master (IM):

Required Rating: 2400 - 2499 [USUALLY] (FIDE Rating), 2400 - 2499 [USUALLY] (ELO Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: As far as I am aware, you only need to reach the required rating to become IM and get 3 norms, you cannot lose your title even if the rating goes below 2400. There are however some International Masters who have not reach Grandmaster title and have a rating above 2500.

Women's International Master (WIM):

Required Rating: 2200 - 2299 (ELO Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: As far as I am aware, you only need to reach the required rating to become WIM. Although, the runner-up of the World Girls Junior Chess Championship is awarded the title along with a Grandmaster Norm.

FIDE Master (FM):

Required Rating: 2300 - 2399 (FIDE Rating), 2300 - 2399 (ELO Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: FIDE Master is awarded to players with a ELO/FIDE Rating between 2300 & 2399. You cannot lose this title if you go below the standard rating.

Women's FIDE Master (WFM):

Required Rating: 2100 - 2399 (ELO Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: Women's FIDE Master is awarded to players with a ELO Rating between 2100 & 2399. You can lose this title if you go below the standard rating.

Candidate Master (CM):

Required Rating: 2200 - 2299 (ELO Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: Candidate Master is awarded to players with a ELO Rating between 2200 & 2299.

Women's Candidate Master (CM):

Required Rating: 2000 - 2199 (ELO Rating)

Awarded By: FIDE (World Chess Federation)

Info: Candidate Master is awarded to players with a FIDE Rating between 2000 & 2199.

National Master (NM):

Required Rating: 2200 - 2299 (Tournament Rating)

Awarded By: USCF (United States Chess Federation)

Info: You need to prove to the USCF that you have a significant level of ability and thought. You can also never lose this title unless you are promoted to a higher title.

There you go. Took me a while to type this so please appreciate it.

Are you sure about losing the FM title? It doesn't say that in FIDE regs, it says quite the opposite:

0.3

The international FIDE titles for over the board play shall be under the umbrella of the QC, which is the final judging unit. The titles are:

0.31

Titles for over-the-board standard chess (as defined in 1.14), the judging unit being the QC:
Grandmaster (GM), International Master (IM), FIDE Master (FM), Candidate Master (CM), Woman Grandmaster (WGM), Woman International Master (WIM), Woman FIDE Master (WFM), Woman Candidate Master (WCM).

0.4

The titles are valid for life from the date confirmed.

I thought I was sure.

But I was wrong.

Thanks for correcting me.

You don't have to be world's highest rating to be world champion, you have to win the world championship. Also never heard you have to be 2600+ in tournament rating to be a Grandmaster, not sure about that.

Personally, I think there should be another title to add to the OP's list for Chess.com's recognized titles. That should be:

National Candidate Master (NCM):
Requirements:

     - Have a 2000 - 2199 USCF Tournament Rating (or at least a foreign rating equivalent to 2000-2199 USCF).

     - Have 5 USCF-Rated tournament performances that are generally impressive for a 2000-rated player.

     - Having a rating floor of 2000 USCF (or a foreign rating equivalent to 2000 USCF).

Awarded By: USCF (United States Chess Federation)
