Playing chess is making people fat?

I'm a huge chess fan.

Even when not playing chess, I watch tv, play with the computer, play with my PSP.

But I'm thin.

It still depends on the person's natural body.

The truth is that most Americans have access to healthy food but do not select it because of its less aesthetic qualities.

Perhaps it is simpler and perhaps less costly in the short term to buy unhealthier foods.  Perhaps they taste better to some people.  I rarely watch television and not all do and it is amazing that those averages are so high yet I have seen higher estimates.

4000 calories???? Who the hell eats that much?

Me!

I exercise so much that I have to eat like crazy to maintain my weight and avoid getting too skinny.  Maybe I should spend less time eating and more time playing chess.

I can't understand your argument... Chess causes obesity?

Of the top players in the world (the ones that spend hours... sometimes 8+ hours per day playing chess), very few of them are at an unhealthy weight.

Chess is a game of discipline. Those who know the game learn intrinsically that balance is important in life... that means taking care of yourself.

The half dozen overweight people in your club, the ones who are 1200 strength and play only 4-5 hours a week, certainly cannot blame chess for their health issues.

That's cuz you're 15, buddy. You use a lot of the food you eat on your physical growth. Wait till you're 20 or 25, and you'll need to reevaluate.

Americans need to learn some tactics...I went to a school where 6th formers used to be able to hand out punishments to others in your house...i know this is incredibly outdated, but well we used to give out chess where the miscreant had to run to one board at one side of a rugby pitch, make a move and then run to another side and move etc....personally was better than changes ...wonder if any of u know what changes was...on topic tho, usa should adopt this form of chess! Chess on the run ! 2 birds with one stone...err 20 stones i mean :O

Let's face it dude, your wife does not play chess, how did she get so huge?

IMO, one of the main problems in the states is the Big Gulp mentality (this marketing strategy is being adopted into Europe as we speak) or shall we call it 'the discount syndrome'?

Buy small things, when you go grocery shopping. Don't eat a complete box of donuts all by yourself. Problem solved.

If you weigh twice as much, you have to use twice as much energy just to move around.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise,

The only way to not accumulate fat is to exercise or burn the calory intake.

Exercise does very little to reduce body fat. It does help in speeding up the metabolism a bit, but exercise does far more for fighting depression, and very little for losing weight.

The human body is extremely resilient and efficient. Run on a treadmill for an hour and see how many calories your body burns. It's about one twinkie - two at the most. Eating three twinkies... well...kiss weight loss goodbye.

There is simply no way around dieting.

MyCowsCanFly

I am willing to eat more if it will improve my chess.

FlowerFlowers

no maybe, def not, playing chess isn't making people fat.

Well, here is my comment. I was born and raised in very south Mississippi. We have one small grocery store and the only restaurants we have within driving distances are ones that only serve friend foods. Not to mention the older generations are opposed to anything healthy; it baffles my mind. My idea of a solution is for people to start opening their minds instead of their mouths.

You say that "Those who know the game learn intrinsically that balance is important in life.." Yet we know that many top Chess players are really cutting in on their social life because of chess. ngl that is an unhealthy amount of chess.

Well technically ppl who exercise only burn 100 calories more than us chess players. Since our brain takes up the rest of the calories. However exercising is healthy as if our brain uses too many calories it could cause us to overreact
