It doesn't seem to be important. ;-)

Do you know of any free databases where I can limit the games by number of moves (I want to see games less than 20 moves long) and then have that information appear on a chess moves tree board?

That's really more a function of a decent chess database program like Scid vs. PC (maybe Chessbase also?). Just use the program to filter the database to all games of 20 moves or less. Idk, for Scid vs. PC, you might need to save the filtered games to a new database in order to see the tree window of the filtered games.

Here's a screenshot using Scid vs PC with a somewhat dated copy of the Caissabase database, filtered to 20 moves (40 half-moves). I had to export the filtered games to a new pgn file before opening the Tree Window.

This is a fantastic list. Thank you for posting it. I'd also include the 15M Games database, which is actually four or five different ones. OTB, Online, Engine, Corr, and Puzzles. So five. There's also the ICOFY db. The Lichess Elite db (which is unofficial) is a filtered version of the Lichess Open db (which is the official one). There's maybe 100M games a month in the latter, and maybe 100,000 per month in the former, as it starts around 2000. Chesscom does provide its own version of the Lichess Online db in the form of the Published Data API. It's heavily detailed and DIY, though. At least it seems that way to me. And they don't really talk about it much, that I've seen, possibly because they don't want everyone and their mother downloading from them. But I'm pretty sure anyone can just plug in the proper URL and get the data they need. If they could fashion the correct URL query, and if they knew how to process JSON.

Opening Master is worth it, IMO. I got the correspondence base, and it's pretty neat. It looks like they update it three times a year, and you get those updates. They also have a 3 GB opening book that you can download. One of the great things about a corr base is that with most correspondence games you're allowed to use an opening book -- and with some of them you're allowed to use tablebases. They say it's to improve the quality of the games, since they do tend to end up in db's. Other corr sites to look at (though most of them require registration) are ICCF, IECG, and LSS.

In some ways, engine games are the most valuable, because they're nearly perfect. There are a few good places to find archives of engine games. You can go here to the CCC, although each tournament is a separate download. They also don't have the full archive, though if you root about there's an article that provides links to the earlier tournaments. They also don't put the ratings in the PGNs, though they do provide them in the tournament info. Another place to go is the TCEC archive, as well as the archive for CCRL (both Blitz and 40/15).

I did go over there on Saturday and there was no indication that the Golem wasn't 99 euros. It might have been the time difference, or else if you were only applying the savings at checkout it would have been rather self-defeating.

Tomatomtom

The ICCF allows the use of engines. If I use a database that contains games from the ICCF am I using an engine? Example: using Chessbase Mega Database 2022. Opening line down to two games, both from the ICCF, moves are probably generated by engines. Am I therefore using an engine? Am I cheating?

OpeningMaster

Best is to consult ICCF arbiter or national delegate. Engines are not allowed. Chess databases are allowed. But not just blindly following.

Opening Master OM CORR has the biggest collection of correspodnance chess games.

Cheers,

Alexander
