The Cream Will Always Rise to the Top

Hi Chess Friends,

For the last few months there has been quite an influx of rude individuals

who prefer to use chess.com as a showplace for their ignorance, rather

then for the purpose it was intended.  This change was first noted when

a post was started suggesting a solution for the rude behavior in the live

chess chat box.

As with any negative behavior within an structured environment, we

have to wonder why here, and why now?  Is chess perceived to be so

pure that if someone wants to act like a jerk that they think they look

even jerkier?  Do they wonder on to play chess, then see some idiot

ranting in a post, and in an act of desperation join in to gain acceptance?

Is a village idiots will strong enough to keep away the quality core of

members that help to build chess.com's reputation, and keep away future

members that catch a clipmse of thier behavior?

I really enjoy this web site.  Have since the day I first landed here.  Over

the last few months I have seen a number of class members step away,

or reduce their exposure, because of changes in the site, or lack thereof.

It is up to the mature core of members to stand strong and force out

visitors using chess.com as a back alley playground.  Without trying to be

diplomatic, without regard for "how this might look", start shooting first

and ask questions later.

If an infraction of the rules takes place report it as abuse.  The staff

has been great dealing with any type of problem against the posted rules.

If it is a gray area, something the staff can't really respond to because of

legal limitations, or someone is just being rude in a post or during a game,

let them have it.  DON'T post who they are or what they did, it will just

feed their already weak ego.  Just let them have it until they can not take

anymore.

Let's let the best of who we are stay on top.

I try to ignore most rude behavior. By letting my game do the talking. Being respectful is how i try to act. perseverance overcomes resistance. With that in mind the cream should lead by example.

A noble sentiment Vic. Trouble is, cream is not the only thing that floats. Sad but true.

i love this place, i really do. but lately the rude behavior has been getting really extreme.

something has to be done!

at this moment all we can do is press a lousy report button when someone is rude, offensive or plain cheating. most of the time nothing will be done and people will continue to be rude.

admins for gods sake take control. this is not some made up story, everyone is talking about it and as victhestick has stated, people are sick of it and leaving.

there are people paying for this site and it starting to turn sour.

Well i'm not so sure about this shoot first mentality. Maybe the reasons for these infractions are valid and you don't know the situation. personally I get really [angry] at a stupid admin who won't [be silent] when they don't know waht they're talking about. I got a warning for saying god in the chat, when the racist statement above mine was perfectly acceptable. [what] is that. i'm still angry as u  can tell by my language, which i usually don't use in replies. Add to that the fact that using language such as crap is not really bad at all. It is a word and was created to convey a message. After they are just words which don't even affect anybody. so saying somebody sucks is exponentially worse than saying im doing crappy today. Yes, curse words are just words and whoever thinks people are lower than them or vulgar for using these words, than they are elitist and dumb. Its also funny how no one actually thinks about the meaning of other words considered acceptable in society. for example, saying ur a jerk is just fine, but in meaning it is much different. jerk does have an alternate meaning. and so my point is that enforcing "bad" language is fruitless, and more emphasis should be put on things that actually harm the people on the site (such as racism), which will in turn harm the site itself.
