The reason i put Fischer at the tenth spot on my list is because he never proved he was the best by playing Karpov. If Fischer didn't cower away from someone challenging him for the world championship then he might be a bit higher in my list regardless of result.
1. Bobby Fischer
2. Jose Raul Capablanca
3. Garry Kasparov
4. Alexander Alekhine
5. Mikhail Tal
6. Paul Morphy
7. Boris Spassky
8. Tigran Petrosian
9. William Steinitz
10. Magnus Carlsen* (will go higher in the future)
I don’t get how so many can make these lists and routinely leave Lasker out of the top ten, and place him behind players like Reshevsky, Kramnik, Anand, Spassky etc... To me Lasker and Kasparov are in a class of their own in the top two.

These are just opinions. They are usually based on several different factors. Not all agree on the factors to be considered--most disagree...
1. Carlsen
2. Kasparov
3. Fischer
4. Karpov
5. Kramnik
6. Alekheine
That based on a combination of accuracy/dominance/style.
My list is only comparing the World champs, with accurate CAPS system used by chess.com.
.. Most of the elite players of today are way stronger than the old chess teachers/masters/authors and champions..
if Fischer vs Karpov, who would win?
Karpov would win as Fischer would forfeit. With no forfeit--Karpov would win narrowly.
Kasparov , Anand , Carlsen , Karpov , Talk , Kramnik , Alekhine , Fisher , Capablanca , Spassky.----+---- ( please consider which player has become W.C. how many times )
1. Fischer
2. Kasparov
3. Morphy
4. Karpov
5. Capablanca
6. Carlsen
7. Anand
8. Lasker
9. Alekhine

The top three I believe are in a tier of their own, they are the only three players that I consider for the top spot on my list.
