It is impossible to compare due to the technology these days. If some of the past greats had the tools avalable today, who is to say how good they would have been?

yes the world of technology is vastly different, imagine playing flanking openings against chess greats from a hundred years ago... if you did have "modern" openings back then you would have most likely been the early world champion of chess :)

Yeah it seems the Eastern Europeans did only two things, drink booze and play chess; it seems not much more to do in the old "Russian" 'countries'.

Kasparov and Lasker. Carlsen is obviously very far from being one of the greatest three-four players ever at age 23, compared to players that were clear #1 for decades and won lots of title matches. I'd already rank him top ten though.
