You can get chess master titles at 1100 elo!!!

I checked out the fide website to see if I could find myself or other people I know (someone at a previous tournament I shuold have a fide rating), and whilst I was wandering around the site I found this: http://arena.myfide.net/ratings-and-titles/titles

And from reading it you basically have to pay for a Chess master title after meeting the requirements (this is according to online chess) but in OTB chess if you meet the requirements to gain a title do you have to pay?

BTW the titles presented online are for those people who want to become known as a 'chess master' and are performing at amateur level. I think that this takes away the hard work of acheiving a title. [just to stress this point you only need 1100 elo to get ACM (Arena Candidate Master)]. I also think that the fact that you need to pay for the title makes it seem like the chess master title means nothing.

What are your thoughts on amateur chess masters?

Of course it's another scheme to raise funds.  And yes, the whole idea of amateur master is absurd.  Still, there should be some way to rank players who don't play OTB but love the game and maybe this is it.  A 1400 will smoke most of the casual players out there, so sure, why not give some recognition and raise funds at the same time?

I wouldn't mind the concept of giving people offiial fide ratings (that can be obtained online) whilst raising some money to help the fide organisation but yes as you did point out giving master titles out is absurd. It's fine for many amateurs to get that recognition they deserve (maybe through other ways like discounts on chess materials and shout outs on the fide website) but giving a master title to an amateur is just making master titles abundant and therefore meaningless.

At first I was against this, because it could be yet another example of "qualification creep".

On second thought, it might be comparable to the martial arts, where you get a belt right from the start of your practice. They don't deny you a belt until you reach the brown belt level, you get one right away, and it indicates your level of progress ( or lack of it!)

It also might be a good way to raise money for a cause that, in the wake of video games and shortening attention spans, could provide funding for chess

There are WGM's who does not know how to checkmate with Knight and bishop and there are many "free" FIDE titles CM FM even IM which are giving to players way below 2000 just for winning some event, for example africa zonal wiiner which is 1850 rated got first place and IM title just like that, 2nd 3rd receive automatically FM and CM and they are even lower rated...

Many examples for this. Titles are giving free even for womans who finish in 10 place in big event, which is not strong enough, but still  WCM/WFM 1600 classic rated with free title.

My advice is get the title while you still can, it is for life. Many people who are agains are just jelous, their skills are even lower. Quick look at chesscom average rating of members.. well is 1099!!!

Well i mean no ones going to care if you are a 1400 titled player so i don't see why this matters at all

It's just an interesting topic and the purpose of getting master titles isn't so people care.

Man, paying for a title at 1100 elo! It's a little bit like those online "junk" college degrees you can get for your dog... a bit of a laugh but I guess it's an okay to waste five euro if you're into that.

de meeste titels worden door geboorte gegeven of gekocht zeg dus niets over de eigenschappen van de mens allemaal onzin most titles are given or purchased by birth say nothing about the properties of the man all rubbish

What i mean is that no one will blink if you say you are a master who is rated at 1400...

I still don't understand what you mean because from what it sounds is that your thought of master is that people look and say wow, but It's true that nobody will care but so what? Also why would you want master at 1400. I am not trying to pick an argument.

You do realise that the only reason you get a belt in karate or judo from day one is because without it your jacket will flap around in the breeze.?

Generally if someone is a titled player people are much more inclined to respect thier opinion however if they are 1400 elo then people will dismiss them as normal which is my point.
