Well basically i thought of this, normal chess but there are 2 zones in different "heights" (marked on image the two zones). Pieces in different zones can't capture, check or do anything on the other zone (unless they are adjacent, then they can check, captures...) You can move one piece in one zone to the other but only if they are adjacent to the other zone, and can only move 1 square to the other zone. The rest works the same as normal chess if the pieces are in the same zone unless if you need to cross to another zone to take a piece in the same zone. Examples and images below.
The different zones
Example of a piece that cannot be taken. Pieces on the same zone but there is another zone in the middle
Example of a piece that can be taken. Pieces are on different zones but since they are adjacent they can take each other.
Pieces in the same zone that can take each other. Since they are in the same zone and the other zone isn't in between, it works like normal chess.
King IS NOT in check here. Pieces are on different zones.
Knight can take if both pieces are adjacent to the same side of different zones, this could be considered a "special rule" too. Knights can check and capture in this position.
