If I were playing this I'd be very tempted to put my rooks on the usual a/h files, so that I retain the option of castling either side - I'm thinking anything else would just disadvantage me. But if you adjust your castling rule, so that castling is allowed wherever the rooks start (same as in Chess960) then you might tempt me to place at least one of my rooks elsewhere. But if winning is the object then quite likely I'd just want to start with the usual RNBQKBNR set up - that could be down to familiarity, but maybe it's because it's the optimal positioning? Perhaps you'd have to ban players from choosing the normal position!
Also I'm not sure how much useful planning I'd be able to do before seeing my opponent's placings. Have you tried playing with these rules and, if so, how did the games go?
A new chess variant! The perfect combination between normal chess and Fischer 960

Hello! Yes I tried this variant and is very interesting to play it. Also the normal position shouldn't be banned because it's a medium way to attack and defend at the same time and is not that scary against other position. And about castle I think it's okay my idea to be like in normal chess but also your idea sounds good, maybe we should combine the rules...
Hello everyone! I thought of a new variant of chess 960 ( a better one in my opinion ). First of all the rules are the same as for classical chess, and castling on the king side and queen side are also available just like in classical chess, but it's not that simple...
First rule the king and the queen are placed on the same fields as in classical chess ( d1 for white queen, e1 for white king and d8 for black queen, e8 for black king. The position of rooks, bishops and knights will be chosen by each player for his pieces, but each player will be able to know how his opponent arranged his pieces ( rooks, bishops and knights) only when the game starts. Now, if you choose to not put your rooks on the a or h squares at the beginning of match, you will not be able to castle, but if you put a rook on a square and one on b square you are allowed to castle only with one on the a square ( long castle) as we normally do in a classical chess game, and so on.
So that's the playing rules, but I also invented rules for eventually face to face tournaments that could possibly happen in the future. Because each player chooses his own setup, they will have to write on the paper the position of their rooks, bishops and knights and when the referee comes to their table, he will take the papers on which they have written down how their pieces will be arranged, and the referee will open the papers in front of them and will arrange the pieces of each player exactly how they noticed on the paper for their pieces to be placed. Online is way more simple to do this because you will choose your setup for your pieces, and at the same time your opponent chooses his own and then the game starts.
I think this is a perfect combination between normal chess and chess 960 ( Fischer random chess) because there are a lot of advantages like:
1. You can make a plan before a game starts, a plan that will have to be adapted to the opponents ideas and the future position that will appear after the pieces will be arranged properly. This will eliminate tons of theory that appear in classical ( normal ) chess but will also give you the opportunity to create a plan before each game which is not possible in chess 960.
2. Even if white will move first, black will be able to attack because he can place his pieces to launch a strong attack in the center, on the king side or queen side if he want this. So it will be equal chance of winning in my opinion.
3. This new chess variant that I did can' t be cheated, and most important we will see in all games strong and powerful attacks and defenses that will make this variant more enjoyable to watch.
If you like my new variant please share this and maybe chess.com will add it in the official chess variants. ( Btw i want credits for this and also the name shall be one of this three: modified Fischer random chess, modified random chess or modified chess 960).
