chess and dice

Playing chess with dice is a great leveller. It was originally a dice game (6 different pieces) similar to backgammon with a blend of skill and luck. My favourite is with 3 dice. Throwing three of the same can be devastating.

Brilliant idea, I think we should play with four dice.

1=Queen move

2=King move

3=Bishop move

4=Knight move

5=Rook move

6=Pawn move

I would roll 1, 1, 3, and 6 and go for 4 move mate :)

Theorhetically, isn't there a 1/9th (4/36) chance to roll a mate in one on the first move with 4 dice?

you are right about having an excuse for losing thwaat is why everyone i know thinks that they are good at backgammon. i use 1 pawn 2 knight 3 bishop 4 rook 5 queen and 6 king  easy to remember in order of value. 3 dice is the most i have used the best opening roll is 1, 2 and 3. Dice chess led to chess being forbidden for christians and moslems as a gambling game so now we only play free-will chess.

 I have come up with a weak version of dice chess. Throw a dice and see what comes up. When a 1 comes up, you cannot move a pawn. When 5 comes up, you can't move a queen etc. I would call this the restriction version of dice chess. This would mean a smaller departure from conventional chess while still adding the element of luck.

Interesting, 2 or more dice?

One is enough.  In your more conventional version ( where 2 dice are used ), some have this rule: When both dice have the same value, the player can move any piece or pawn.

The best opening roll with 3 dice is 1, 2 and 3. The worst is 3's 4's 5's and 6's. Later on three 1's can lead to a capture, a promotion and another capture for instance.
