That's probably what happened, it could also be an odds game (don't know how strong shatranj engines are), but then it doesn't seem winable for black.

Hello all, the solution was 1. ...b5, and after the knight retreats, then 2....Bc4+ and ...Kxc7.

Ah yess! We were almost there but missed the correct move order... Thanks for sharing this pearl. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-variants/i-love-chaturanga?page=3#comment-63426191

Hey guys,

I have just created a new chess club for 'chaturangers'. Everybody can join... Be massive please!

Chaturanga could seem similar to Chinese Chess but actually the game play is completely different. No cannons. Horses and elephants can jump over other pieces. Pawns capture diagonally, so they can protect each other. No river, nor palaces, all pieces are free to move on the whole board,

I agree. Also, the pawns are like in modern chess rather than spaced out like Chinese chess. The elephants and advisors protecting each other and being confined to within the river and the palace respectively is an important element of the game. This all makes chaturanga a lot closer to modern western chess than Chinese chess.

Interesting article on the history of Chess

Interesting that they can see chess pieces from a few pieces of misshapen wood

ChatuRangers' Club

I formed a new club for those who are interested: www.chess.com/club/chaturangers-and-friends

I think from now on I'll share more informations and I'll publish more stuff in that club forum rather than in this forum. As always... when I have time!

I like that variant too

The name Shatranj was probably more correct. Chaturanga reminds me a position of Yoga more than a chess game.

Mr_Check58

The rule "bare king = loss" in chaturanga/shatranj is pretty questionable.  IMO it really depends what the other player has got vs the lone king.  If there is 1 or both rooks, then yeah, the bare king is pretty much screwed, but if there's only 1 single knight or alfil, there's no way to checkmate the lone king.  Perhaps with a REALLY good play it could be driven into a corner and  then stalemated, which was also considered a loss in chaturanga, but with average Joe or mediocre play that bare king chase might go on indefinitely... Thoughts?

samuelebeckis

If you get rid of the bare-king rule then half of the games end in a draw.

Do you like Chaturaji?

Yes, I like!! My club in fact addresses both Shatranj players and Chaturaji players under the unique name "Chaturangers". The two games are truly different in play, but they surely have a common ancestor. wink.png

I'm disappointed.

I don't know what @Aaneliia -- strongest confirmed-female Shatranj player -- did so badly that she deserved a total ban. I am certainly very sad because I considered 'Nelly' a true friend of mine.

I trust in the wisdom of the Chess.com Administration. However it seems excessive to me that even her comments have been removed from the forums! I can't understand the reason for this ...

Please share new informations regarding chauranga चतुरंग . I really like to read about this topic
