Infinite Chess

I recently came up with a really wacky chess variant idea that I have named infinite chess. Infinite Chess is essentially regular chess played on a chess board with an infinite number of squares. The game would begin with the pieces set up on an 8×8 grid like they usually are at the beginning of a chess game. This 8×8 grid would be in the middle of a chess board with infinite squares (yes I know that an infinite chess board has no middle since it extends infinitely in every direction but bear with me here). Pawns would promote when they reached the 8th/1st rank and en passant and casting would be allowed as usual. Infinite Chess leads to some interesting variations on regular chess. For example rooks and queens and bishops become much more valuable since they can move as far as they want while knights aren't as important anymore. Furthermore, Queen (or rook) and king vs. King is no longer a forced checkmate since the lone king can retreat infinitely. But while it is harder to checkmate in the endgame, attacking is easier in infinite chess since it is possible to attack the opponents king from behind. What other wacky results would infinite chess have? Should chess.com add it as a variant in their variants area? (Unfortunately wacky chess would have to be played online only Due to the impossibility of constructing an infinite chess board in real life.

I think some people were playing this (with a few added types of pieces) on the forums.

Yeah, here:

It would be so full of glitches that it will take the online server 2.65 minutes to process each move😑

joseph7505

Just insulting the new online server

joseph7505

But it might be fun

Yeah online glitches might be a problem as well as trolls who just move their pieces into infinity on like the first move. Aside from that though it would probably be kind of fun. I think casting would also he bad since it would expose one's king to side attacks.

Also if some decided to play like a troll they could start right away by taking a king and hiding it five miles a way and just hide

Yeah, I always thought it would be fun to play extremely long moves... you know, like 100 digits long. You'd have to write a small piece of code to check when something is on the same diagonal (same rank or file would be obvious).

Uh, but not the king like you said, because the king can only move 1 square at a time so...

1,1 on same diag as 2,2 or 3,3

you add/subtract both the numbers the same

llama47

Yeah, if column - column = row - row then the two squares are on the same diagonal.

joseph7505

The way to play is to make so kings cannot leave an 8 by 8 grid but all other pieces can

llama47

I don't think that would be a useful rule... err, unless you want to use those bounds to help you checkmate. Then I guess that'd make sense.

joseph7505

It would make it a faster game and less usefull for them to take a piece to infinity and beyond

llama47

Maybe you don't realize how slowly kings move...

Meaning they will want to keep the other pieces near there king so as not to be mated

A 12x12 board with the standard 8x8 setup would be pretty interesting to try. Same idea with more attacking possibilities and less theory, but a player that's up a decent amount of material would still be able to checkmate without too many issues. The inability to play in real life (and the possibility of a player running away for a infinite period of time with their king) would also be gone.

Ilampozhil25

you can just cut the king anyway

or add more pieces to make it easier

Yes, i once saw somebody play (literally):(that number is too hard to type,2)

I kind of like the idea of a larger chess board with the standard 8×8 in the middle. 12×12 might be a little to small to produce an Infinite Chess sort of effect on the game where rear attacks and wider flanking maneuvers could occur but I think that a 16×16 or 20×20 board would be pretty fun. Of course this is not infinite chess anymore but it would still be pretty cool.

I would say more of 64x64
