Dead Bodies Chess is a variant of Chess where when a piece is captured, it does not go off the chessboard; it stays on the chessboard, but is dead, lying on the ground. In DBC, when a piece is captured, it will be lying on the ground and be placed right behind the piece that captured it or where the knight came from for knights. They also need to get away from the body on their very next turn. If they can’t, it’s called “Stinkmate” and the game ends in a draw. It is also illegal for a piece to be touching a dead body of the opposite color. Dead bodies cannot be moved by either side, captured by either side, or control any square on the chessboard. But how can you heal dead bodies? That’s where you get a new chess piece.
In DBC, there’s a new piece called the “nurse”. You don’t get her at the start of the game. You can only summon her via pawn promotion. The nurse moves and captures like a bishop, but can also heal dead bodies like a queen aiming at a piece. When a piece is healed, the nurse doesn’t move and the piece comes back to life. The nurse can also not heal dead bodies if there is something in the way. The nurse can also indeed be captured and become a dead body herself! Nurses are worth 6 points, they are marked with the letter U, and healing is marked with “Ur(position)”.
You can also win DBC by capturing at least 10 opponent pieces, and it is called “Assassinmate”. Checkmate is still possible, but it’ll be a rare endgame in DBC.
