Viking Chess Arne Basse 1966

Does anyone have any information on a variant chess set designed by Arne Basse in 1966?  He was a Danish furniture designer.  He designed the set shown below and called it Viking Chess.  Any info you can provide would be great - especially the instructions on how to play.  Thanks!

There is this game Hnefatafl, which sometimes is referred to as "Viking chess". But the set in your picture does not really look like the same game.

Thanks for your comment.  No, this is not Hnefatafl.  Over the years many games have been referred to as "Viking Chess."  It seems as though it is sort of a generic name that gets used a lot for marketing purposes.  Unfortunately this leads to a lot of confusion when trying to identify specific games.  I'm sure this game has a proper name, but I have no clue what it is.

Found some additional information that this game may have been called The Wind Rose Game.

Optically it remembers the medieval Spanish game Los Escaques, but this had nothing to do with Vikings

Thank you for this post.  I have been searching for the rules for this game for over two decades after, sadly, they were lost.  I can remember some of them, but would love to find a copy.  I was the person who made the original post on   Cheers

Sadly, I haven't found out any additional information since the original post.  I saw this game for sale at Goodwill but many of the pieces were missing - as well as the instructions - so I didn't buy it.  Still, my curiosity was peaked so I was hoping someone here would know.  I have searched everywhere.  This game, whatever it is, is extremely rare.

I received some new information yesterday from another game site.  The game, according to this correspondent was called the Windrose Game or Danish Viking Chess.  I can now almost fully recreate the rules with one minor point as follows:

The goal of the game is to checkmate your opponent's king as in regular chess.

Board: The board is made up of "rings" linking "crosses" (the spaces).  There is a centre space, the “star”, in the middle.

Pieces: There is a king, 2 rooks (flat tops), 2 bishops (spikes) and 4 thralls per side.

All pieces start off the board.

On their first turn (white goes first) each player places their king on the edge of the board.

In the second and subsequent turns, each player can EITHER bring a piece onto the board edge OR move an existing piece on the board.

The different pieces move as follows:

-          Thrall moves one space in any direction

-          Rook moves up to 3 spaces up or down, or one space to the side

-          Bishop moves up to 3 spaces around one of the rings, or one space up or down.

-          King moves up to 3 spaces in any direction up or down

Once placed on the board a piece can enter the centre space or move through it.

A player takes an opponent's piece by moving a piece into their opponent's piece's space.  Once a piece is removed from the board it cannot return.

When a King is mated the game is over.

Note: One commenter thought that a Thrall could be promoted to a Rook or Bishop if it reached the centre star space but this cannot be confirmed. This could be played as an optional rule.

Thanks for the follow-up post.  On which game site did you find this information?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I found that information on this page: https://boardgames.stackexchange.com/questions/53005/can-you-identify-this-likely-chess-variant
