It will be better game than chess and chesslike games for the following reasons: 1. In chesslike games, white starts first and both sides have the same burden and goal. In LOTR, it will be different: White will strive to achieve certian place with certian piece, black will strive to stop them. 2. Chess seems to be drawish, it will not be. 3. It will have different armies unlike chess which means different strategies and tactics from each side with different pieces. 4. One on one fights will probably start too late and developing a theory will be hard 5. The board will have corners to turn on the right or left and pass the way again. Some zones of the board will be wider which will prevent pieces from going of effect the other edge of the board, unlike in chess or other variants. May be there are more let me think
Any ideas on "the lord of the rings chess"?

I decided to make Frodo weaker, he can move like a king but can not capture. Sam can move like a knight+king and capture like them

I once thought of this but wanted to make the ring a separate object that can be obtained by more pieces. There must be some advantages and disadvantages in having it, so that there would be an incentive to give it to your weakest piece.

This might be better if the location of the ring is hidden to black. White could secretly assign one of his pieces as a ringbearer at the beginning.
Another thing that would make it better, but might be too unchesslike, would be limited visibility, so each player would only be able to see the spaces his pieces could move to.

I want to invent a new game like chess. it will be based on "The lord of the rings movie" and chess but slightly different from chess. Let me explain the idea:
* There will be a larger board, it will need a board larger than chess'. The game will have characters from middle earth and the goal will be to capture the ring which will be with Frodo in our game. It will not be a symmetrical board in order to be like the game I wish. some parts may be bigger, longer and e.t.c
*There will be two sides. White and Black. White will have stronger pieces, Black will have weaker but more pieces.
*There will be a special square behind the zone of Blacks to which white must reach with "Frodo."
*White will have Frodo, this will be like King of chess but slightly different: it can not stay on the corner and sit there only till the endgame. it needs to move without being captured. It needs to reach the special square behind Blacks. When Frodo reaches the square White will win, once Frodo is captured the Black will win. White pieces must open way for Frodo and protect him on his conquest into the "square."
* Black will not have such a burden, it can lose all pieces, if Black loses all pieces except one and that last one captures Frodo, black still wins.
*All characters will have types of movement like in chess. There will be (not limited to) Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas and Sam. Their movements will differ slightly.
* Nazguls and Eagles will take place in the battle, I am planning to include them as well but I doubt I can find a way which will make sense after their inclusion. It is a question mark as of now.
* I am planning to include countries as well: Rohan, Gondor, Imladris, Khazaddum and Mordor and Isengard. Parts of the board will belong to them
about movements and such:
*Frodo will be like king or may be King+horse (knight as english speakers name), not specified yet. It can not be lost but it can be captured twice: when it is captured for the first time it will lose its magical armour, if it is captured second time then the game is lost. So, black has two take care of it.
*Sam will be like Frodo if Frodo is granted horse's move, otherwise it will be slightly stronger than Frodo.
* Aragorn will move like Vezir (of chess) + horse (of chess) + camel (of Tamerlane chess). If you do not know how camel moves, it moves one square further than knight
*Boromir should be [slightly] weaker than Aragorn. So, he will move like Vazir (queen).
*Legolas will be stronger than Boromir but weaker than Aragorn in terms of moving. Two ways comes to my mind: Moving like Wazir but has an archery skill. within in a knight's move range of Legolas, he can kill the enemywithout moving there (meaning killing with archery) but can kill only one piece. if we do not grant it to him, he will move like queen+knight. The first type seems to be very powerfull, I think if we grant him the first way we should grant it to Aragorn as well but for a slightly shorter distance. (I suppose it due to the book. The story is actually Aragorn's story and the main guy is Aragorn. so, let he act as he is)
*Gimly: he will be like Rook+horse or Elephant (bishop) + horse but with special ability: within a range of horses move in chess, it can kill all opponents that are in the horse's move range of Gimly.
* Gandalf: He too will move like Queen but in order to represent his magical skills on the board, we should grant him an ability that is very special. How can it be? I think of some ways: 1. 2-3 times during the game it can save Frodo even if Frodo is too far away from him. 2. if granting him point1 is too much of an advantage then it can save other pieces even if they are far from each other but he will be able to save Frodo, it will save by killing the attacking piece of enemy that is about to capture his mates. but at once it can kill only one enemy, not more. 3. It can make transportations to the friendly zones (e.g if Gandalf is in Imlasris' squares it can make transportation to Gondor or Rohan) and it will not be counted as move, after transportation Gandalf can move once again but only Gandalf can move if he makes transportation.
All of this special abilities may have flaw, we will discuss it here. prpose if you have idea about it.
*Faramir: He will be like Rook+horse and he will have soldiers (pawns). Once Faramir is captured his pawns can be used by Boromir and Frodo only, otherwise they will stay where they are and they can be used to defend their location. if boromir is also dead, Frodo can command them but if Boromir is alive then Frodo can not command them. How many pawns he will have is open to discussion and not determined yet.
*Black side will also have army. they will have pawns, much more than the white side.
*Black's strong pieces will be less than white's and they will leave Mordor. at best they can reach Gondor at best.
*Black can lose any and every piece and they will still hold on to play. They will not have burden of defending special king.
* the area around mordor must be wider. if Mordor is granted, say, vertically 6 squares long distance and 5 squares long distance horizontally, there will be 2 more rows and files in each side that can not be fulled by Black so that Frodo can have extra roads and roads can be opened by Aragorn and his crew. Between the special sqaure and Mordor there must lie one rank at least.
*The strongest piece of Blacks will be weaker than Aragorn in terms of movement. May be the strongest piece of Black will be able to move like Bishop+knight (and may be + camel as well).
*black pawns will move like pawns of chess.
*black will have piece that can move like horse of chess.
*They will have pieces that moves like bishop of chess.
*Black will have only one very strong piece and it will be called The witch king.
*Black will have Saruman as well. It will be equivalent of Gandalf.
Nothing is decided yet, all are open to discussions. if you have idea, propose please. I think we will need a chessboard so large and different that it had better be played on computer only, in order to play physically it will be very difficult to construct
