Capablanca Chess?

Capablanca Random Chess would be a great variant to play on chess.com because It combines the piece set and 10x8 board from Capablanca Chess with the permutation idea of Fischer Random Chess (Chess960).

If chess.com puts capablanca chess on the site, I'd be willing to give it a try.

i would like to see mbc chess. modern bird chess on here. also known as embassy. gothic chess is good too but ed trice has it copytwrited so i don't think chess.com could use it.

It seems the patent on Gothic Chess expired.

Swifty357

oh cool.  Hopefull chess.com puts it on here then.  I never liked that patent anyway.  Patenting a board game that has been around since the 1600's.  Ed Trice did more damage to Gothic Chess than any enemy ever could have.  I think it would have been more popular if someone else was promoting it.  Trice was abrasive.

Two pieces in my own variant is based on Capablanca's Archbishop and Chancellor.

(Of course, the rules of my variant are being updated. haha)

I also would like to play fantasy chess:

If a piece moves on to any file, it transforms into that piece (excluding pawns or kings) :

This is now a bishop.

Or backwards chess:

(The pawns go the opposite way)

Or I-forgot-what-it's-called-chess ( Whenever you capture a piece, you can move like that piece. For instance, if a queen captures a kngiht, it can move like both a queen and a knight).

Perhaps you mean absorption chess? Tongue Out

What are archbishops and chancellors?
SuperbKnightRaider
I have no idea about them

Personally, I found Carerra's arrangement of the pieces to make the most sense, from one point of view. But whether you take the Carerra, Bird, or Capablanca arrangements, Castling is messed up.

So Seirawan Chess, now called Sharper Chess, was a good idea.

Say that you want to play with R+N and B+N, but you don't want SHARPER chess's crammed board and number of chieftains to tribesmen, nor do you want Capablanca chess's problematic board. How would you do that?

One way you could incorporate these pieces is to decide what piece is placed next to the King at the start of the game by using a random number generator. You could do this with a 6-sided die, or coins, or a program/website such as Random.org.

With a die, all you need to do is roll and check the remainder of the roll when divided by 3.

If 0 - you use the queen.

If 1 - you use the chancellor (R+N).

If 2 - you use the archbishop (B+N).

Number doesn't really matter so long as each piece corresponds to 1 number.

Using 2 coins, you could flip them to determine what piece you should use. For each coin, Heads is valued as 1, Tails is valued as 0. Thus the maximum number you can get by flipping is 2, the minimum is 0. And as above, if 0, you use the queen, and so on.

R+N and B+N have their own unique intricacies when looking at the starting position that influences how the games would be played out:

  • The archbishop setup differs from the classic setup in that the f-file pawn is protected by the archbishop. Usually the pawns on f2 and f7 are considered weak points in the position as they are only defended by the king. However, the d-file pawn loses 1 defender, because unlike the classic setup, it is not backup up by the archbishop. That's something you've got to consider when playing any line that starts 1.d4.
  • The chancellor setup differs from the classic setup in that White can immediately threaten checkmate with 1. Cc3. This forces Black to respond by playing either c6, Na6, or Ce6, all of them basically bend the knee to White and lets him control the game. Capablanca's chess poses a similar problem: 1. d3, even when played perfectly, gives White a huge advantage.

So, trying to incorporate the best of both worlds poses its own set of problems. Maybe the chancellor question could be solved by swapping the positions of Black's king and queen piece?

And have the effort of modding? Then brainking.com is so much easier.

If you mod I play Capablanca here against you.

I’d love to see Capablanca chess available here. Eschew the stinkin’ draw!

Lichess staff members did admit in a podcast two years ago they were considering adding Seirawan Chess (S-Chess) but because of additional complications the idea didn't get implemented. Most of the playerbase on lichess don't care for variants but for the portion that care, fairy pieces is exciting. My impression is that people is so used to regular chess that they won't adapt for variants that easily. Unfortunately this is the sad truth. Almost no-one is interested in variant chess except for Chess960 on rare occasions. I admit i'd considered buying the capablanca variant set from house of staunton but because it will never be used (i asked my club members and no-one is particularly eager to try it).
