Fantasy Chess

UPDATE:  I've started an Excel Spreed sheet with some of the ideas we've talked about here using 2011 US Champ data.  Please feel free to comment and/or change info as you see fit.

I'm looking for a Fantasy Chess site that is set up like Fantasy Football.  The Fantasy Chess sites I've found so far you just pick what order you think each person will place in.  BORING!  I want a draft where each Fantasy player picks their team by the piece!

Example (for 2012):  Someone might pick GM Nakamuras' Bishops, someone else's Rooks, etc...  Each round you get points based off how many points of material your team took with the pieces you picked for them (Not sure what to do about checkmates).

Anyone know of a site that plays Fantasy Chess like this?

I have no idea, but I have a suggestion for your checkmate problem.  You get a full point for delivering the checkmate.  Your piece gets half a point if it is a supporting piece.  This can be guarding the piece that delivered the checkmate, or cutting off an escape square for the enemy king.

I'm thinking you might want to give "survival" points, too.  So if your GM draws every game, you can get points if your piece is still on the board after the last move is played.

I was thinking of something like that for checkmates, but worth 10-15 points if the Queen is worth 9.

I really like the survival points idea!

Also there is Pawn promotion.  How many points should it be worth, should the piece give partial points to the person who picked pawns, etc...

But I'm not a programmer nor do I have the resources to run a server.

I'm intrigued.

Sounds terrible. The idea is to watch a 90 minute game of chess hoping your piece gets used?

We are just talking about improving on the idea that The United States Chess Federation is using.  Their Fantasy Chess is to have everyone pick the order they think the players will place.  Whom ever picked the order closes to the out come wins.  That is nothing like Fantasy Football or Fantasy Baseball in the US.

Also, all of the moves for each game is put on many websites so you don't have to watch any games.

How about this:

Each high-profile grandmaster would get a chess engine that fits their style. For example, Tigran Petrosian's engine(Petrosian 1.0?) would play like Petrosian himself, grinding his enemies to death and stuff like that, while Kasparov 1.0 and Sokolov 1.0 will play strong attacking chess.

Then you pick an engine, your opponent picks and engine and you see who wins. Living grandmasters might even get to tell the programmers what sort of moves their engine should make.

Then we can finally sort out the "games that will never be played" fiasco once and for all.

Aron Nimsowitsch versus William Steinitz, go go go!

The values I'm thinking of using;

Captured:

Queen: 9

Rook: 5

Bishop/Knight: 3

Pawn: 1

Surivor: 25% of capture value

Pawn Promotion: 5

Checkmate:

Attack: 3

Support: 1

Check: 0.25 (attacking piece only)

These numbers will be changed, just something to start with.  Now all I have to do is go through the 2011 games to get an idea of what the numbers will look like.  There is a working Google.doc spreed sheet here:

Why do points have to be used? Why not guess the specific pieces that will be left at the end and who will win or if you think it will be a draw and go from there?

Mogford

jtt96, how would your system work with 49+ games?  How would you determen the winner at the end of a tournament with 8+ players and 4+ fantasy players?  The system we are talking about is for tournaments as a whole.

I've been really busy and haven't compiled any 2011 data yet.  2012 might be finished before I have time...

jtt96

hmm. ok. I think i see your point.

Hey, I'd be interested in reviving this. Would anyone else care to join me, even just to pitch in a few suggestions?
