Really Bad Chess

I was browsing through Slate this morning and came across an interesting article. A new variation of chess has been created dubbed "Really Bad Chess."  From the article:

Really Bad Chess is, basically, chess with random pieces. I recently played a board in which I was given one pawn, two bishops, eight knights, and three queens. My computer opponent got two pawns, three bishops, two rooks, six knights, and two queens. (Each side always gets one king, in the chess-appropriate position.)

I was wondeirng if anyone has tried it, or if we can get the variant on chess.com.

It's really fun!

The game is only available as a phone app.  I have the iphone version, and I understand it's also available on Android.  So, No, we won't get it on chess.com anytime soon.

The developer put a fair amount of planning into it.  You can just play for fun, or play "ranked" games.  "Ranked" in this context means that you start with a certain numerical value that represents the difference in the power of the white-vs-black pieces.  I think you always play white.  You start with a game where you've got like 5 queens.  You win a game, your rank goes up, and the next game is slightly less imbalanced.

The game also has an Undo feature.  You get 20 Undos for free; more cost a little money.

The basic idea in the game is that all your knowledge of openings is useless -- you have to analyze the whole board and think about every move.

The game is not available for android. It is said in many places that it is but when you try to download it it open ''chess.com'' app on google play store or where ever you tried to download it from.

It's not meant to be a serious variant. It's a puzzle game. And a very good one.

I have a Galaxy and kept seeing if it's finally available for download. I finally downloaded it onto my iPod. I used it for a bout two minutes and don't really care if they ever have a version for Galaxy. it's just not my thing, although I see that lots of people seem to enjoy it.

I played it for about an hour on my Android phone. I prefer Chess 960 over this variant, since this variant doesn't feel that similar to the normal chess: too few pawns to make pawn chains and breaks, no castling so kings are rarely safe, and no stalemate rule.

"Really bad chess" is the cause for my smart phone battery not lasting as long as I like (e.g., my waking hours), because I am addicted to playing this great game. I get in at least three games a day, but more when Überdad duties require waiting periods between drop-off/pick-up.

Practices a different skill in analyzing how pieces can be worked to achieve checkmate.

they should add this to chess.com I feel like it would be a great experience. 😁
