Netflix "The Queen's Gambit" wins Emmy
While driving to work I was listening to the morning show on the radio and they mentioned a number of Emmy winning shows, including the Queen's Gambit, and saying "all shows nobody's heard of". A number of non-chess-players that know I play chess mentioned the series to me but that was only a small portion of the total number of non-chess-players that know me and know I play chess.
Regardless, our over-the-board club received a boost with the show when it first came out. Maybe we'll get a bit more of a boost with the Emmy win.

Non-chess playing neighbors of mine were talking about it. Some, who knew that I play chess, approached me to ask about it. I think those radio talkers you listened to were out of touch, as radio talkers so often are.

I remember when the show first came out, I mentioned it to my non-chess playing sister, and she told me that she wanted to see it, because it came highly recommended by friends of hers.

It is not so much a chess story, but a story about a young woman confronting her demons. The chess was just the vehicle.

The book was written by Walter Tevis, who wrote The Hustler. I read it many years ago, and I remember thinking that it would make a good movie, but it wouldn't have enough of a broad appeal to be made.

I read the book after watching the TV series, last year. A lot of it is nearly identical, but there were a couple of significant changes here and there.

The Hustler, 1959
The Man Who Fell to Earth, 1963
Mockingbird, 1980
The Steps of the Sun, 1983
The Queens Gambit, 1983
The Color of Money, 1984
I suspect Tevis knew he was dying (Lung cancer, 1984) when he finished the last 3.

Was I the only one who didn't like it? Cinematography was average at best and the plot wasn't exactly enthralling either

Maybe not the only one.
It won both the "Golden Globe" and "Emmy" awards for Best Limited Series

I didn't see the series but I read the book. I was exceedingly unimpressed with it. In my opinion the plot was thin and rather contrived, the character development lacked real substance and the writing itself seemed second-rate. The best thing about it was that it was short enough to get through in an hour or two. I understand the series had the redeeming qualities of opulent sets and fine acting.
