In 1916, the disaster of World War I took a toll on chess players and prizes. Dr. Siegbert Tarrasch (1862-1934) and Jacques Mieses (1865-1954) played a chess match in Berlin in which the prize was a half-pound of butter. Tarrasch won the match and the butter with 7 wins, 2 losses, and 4 draws!

In June 1995, Gilberto Rodriquez-Orejuela was arrested in Columbia for illegal importation of 200 metric tons of cocaine over the past 10 years. He was known as “the chess player”.

In 1971, engineer and inventor Louis Statham (1907-1983) sponsored the Louis D. Statham Masters tournaments in Lone Pine, California. The event had a $45,000 prize fund, paid by Statham. He paid for all the travel and living expenses for all participants. He sponsored his tournament in Lone Pine from 1971 to 1981. He built the $300,000 Lone Pine Town Hall for his chess tournaments and donated it to the city.
