The title in Spanish is Dragones de cuera or in english Leather soldiers (dragons).
The leather dragons (or soldiers) were a special body within the army of the Hispanic monarchy that, like the European dragons, were essentially a cavalry force that was also prepared to dismount when necessary and become infantry.
They were called “de cuera” because they wore vests made with seven layers of skin, the so-called cueras, which offered good resistance against the weapons of the natives.
They were created as such in the late 16th century and have since been entrusted with custody of the northern border of New Spain , which came to include Texas, Arizona, New Mexico , much of California, and parts of Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.
