Am I obligated to take a pawn?

I play chess at work and a coworker says I cheat because I don't take a pawn and instead I move forward completely ignoring to take. I know I'm in the right but he doesn't believe it can be done, other coworkers also say I'm obligated to take and I don't know if they're mistaken by something else.

A pawn can move forward to an unoccupied square. Why worry about the opinion of someone who doesn’t know how to play?

No, you aren’t obligated to take at any time unless it’s the only move to get your king out of check. That’s checkers where you have to take

If it was one specific situation there’s a decent chance that it was the only move to get you out of check but if they say you always have to take it they’re just wrong

Unless you are playing a chess variant, which is entirely different game, you do not have to take anything the opponent offers. I think the name of the variant is anti chess in English (in my language it is a called differently and it virtually translates to "Eat Eat", so basically the name tells you that you have to take).

A bit off topic, apology for that, but in any case, you do not have to take the pawn (unless it is the only legal move on the board).
