Bad experience with a coach

I'm a coach too, and that definitely sounds like a horrible experience that you had with Charles. That style of coaching would certainly not cater to your learning needs. I guess his approach was a complete misfit for what you really needed.

It may never be a good idea to pay an x amount upfront to a coach. Individual payments are better.

His style of teaching didn't match your style of learning, so you refused to give him a chance. He tried to teach you to play 10 minutes and tried to tell you what you shouldn't do, but you rejected him after two lessons. The way it looks, he's not a bad coach; you're a bad student.

He might very well be an excellent player. And maybe for advanced players he would be a fine coach. My understanding of the game is not at a level where I can make that determination.

re: the large text

Nah, from what you said he sounds awful. Doesn't have the first clue about how to teach.

It just depends.

Depends on the goals, the player, and the coach. If all 3 are a good match, then coaching can be great... typically it's less then great, but it can still be useful.

Dm now!

I wrote a small bit of software that downloads a person's games and looks at a few things...

Very high likelihood this guy cheats. Buyer beware.
