Breaks my heart to see discrimination against Russians.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to get political. Not trying to get locked or anything. But what’s happening on chess.com, where people are refusing to play Russian players just because of what’s “going on”, that’s disgusting. That’s discrimination. Please don’t do that, nothing is going to get better if you do that.

BackToEgypt

Agreed. Sadly, this stuff happening on chess.com is just a reflection of what's happening in many places. Most of the time there's no discussion between players anyway, at least in my experience. Just play or don't play but Russian players should not be singled out.

I agree to this one.Blaming the Russians doesn’t solve the war.I even see some Russians protesting and some even got jail time

You assume they dont realize that their leaders actions are affecting them. The thing is though, 1. many people are protesting, and getting arrested, and 2. a friend of a online friend is a russian army conscript, they were saying that they didnt want to join, but were afraid of Putin

I am aware many do know. But also many do not. Cut them from the world entirely and perhaps it'll quicken and enlarge the protests.

Alternatively, it might push more of them towards Putin.

Also true, I guess we had better not sanction them at all in that case as that could also push more towards Putin. Let's let him have free reign over Europe, and do nothing. Good idea.

The world is not “doing nothing”. I was just listing a possible implication of your solution.

MisterWindUpBird

Bias against individuals over their nationality or heritage is not the mentality that can fix anything, but its opposite.

There are implications of every idea. Utterly pointless listing them all though.

If you don’t consider the implications of a solution, then it’s a bad solution.

Example: Prohibition amendment in the US. Instead of banning alcohol, the law only made the black market thrive.

So we should praise them and give Russian National's free diamond memberships ?

What you just said doesn’t have anything to do with the topic. How do you determine the difference between a Russian nationalist and a Russian protester on chess.com? What a joke.

FoxWithNekoEars

Judging people for being a part of some nation is just idiotic. It doesn't even say anything about their political opinion it means litterally nothing. I don't like pulling out words like racism etc.. but every person with a common sense should know that insulting people because of nationality is nonsence.

And even if you know that they support something what you hate, the jugging people for their political opinions is also stupid. Maybe not literally idiotic but stupid for sure. You can't know what news they read, who instilled in them an opinion about something, what opinion has their family etc...
If you find a person who has another opinion just rather try to explain with arguments instead of going in rage and refusing playing with them or insulting them in other ways.

First of all, it breaks my heart to see Ukrainian and Russian people die in a war.

Banning Russia from international sports events to me is unavoidable, as sad as it is for sportmen and fans who are punished for something they are not guilty of.

But on a personal level, I would never stop talking to Russians or playing Russians here. Many Russians do not support Putin, and even those who do are not all in favor of this war.

It's 2022, and people should have learned that you won't solve problems by not talking with eachother.

I'm looking forward to many games against Russian players - despite the fact that most are much better players than I am.

We totally need to isolate the whole of Russia. The sooner everyday Russian's realise that the consequences of their leaders actions are affecting themselves the more chance they will stand up for what is right. It's a simple concept.

Of course it is not their fault, however they still have the ability to do something.

Spitting in a face of somebody is the worst possible way how to convince them to do literally anything what would you like to they do.
This will just never work.
Instead of that try to explain, try to convince them politely...

It does. I want russian IP's banned from chess.com. Whereas this guy wants 'the opposite'

Because banning Russians from playing the board game achieves something.

By banning all Russians from the site and if other sites follow suit, it plays right into Putin’s hands. It gives the Russian people a common enemy. It won’t get better from there.

I sympathize with those dying, but I also sympathize with Russians being blamed and discriminated against because of their ethnicity. One is obviously more important/bigger than the other, but they are both problems nonetheless.

It is literally just a sanction. Like all the other sanctions being handed out. Open your eyes you idiot.

Well soon enough Russia will be sanctioned from everything. That’ll be fun to see.

No one said anything about diamond memberships.

I think what he meant with opposite is instead of fixing things, being biased just breaks things even more (the opposite of fixing things).

Cupola70

WE MUST BAN ALL RUSSIANS FROM THIS SITE!!!!

Neandertaler76

I guess, many people around the world feel helpless towards the aggression we see during the last days. And feeling helpless makes people susceptible to simplifications.

No, we should not banish "the Russians" from playing here. To be honest, I prefer playing people to playing nations, and I'm quite sure that those playing here won't do so while sitting in a tank. (Even those sitting in the tanks are not the ones responsible for the bloodshed, I know.)

You are right.

There is no internet connection in a tank.
