Have you tried your settings?

https://www.chess.com/settings

You have the option to change your name only one time.  After that, you have to write to support@chess.com for help.

When someone changes their name -- what happens to, e.g., prior games, prior messages, etc.  Will people still be able to find them?

I, too, was surprised when I signed up to chess.com vis google, and it assigned me a name -- I wasn't expecting that.

The prior games, puzzles, etc. go with the new name.

Thanks for the quick response.  OK, so your answer tells me how it all looks from my vantage point -- all my stuff is still there.  I'm wondering how it looks to others.  Just one quick example: in my "message" section, I see messages from player1, player2, player3.  Now if player2 changes his name to, say, "heythere", what will it look like in my message section?  If I played against "player2" last week, will my game with him show up as if when I played him his name was "heythere"?

(I hope my questions makes sense!  I guess they are related to: will the new friends I've made here still be able to tind/identify me?)

You see it in the forum all the time. People change names and the posts they have made change. The only thing that doesn't change is when someone has quoted them. The names in quoted portions don't change.
