I've started threads in General Chess Discussion that were seemingly arbitrarily moved Off Topic, where I now create most of my threads anyway. But the other day, I started a thread about the ambiance and decor of chess venues, which perfectly matches the stated purpose of the "General Chess Discussion" forum.  The thread was not deviating from the topic, it was continuing along those lines when it was moved into off topic where it lost its visibility where people were discussing it General Chess Discussion.  So, since when are chess venues not chess-related?  People in that forum talk about other things that might affect the mood of the players and their game, so why not a thread about the ambience of where they play?

If you compare the description of General Chess Discussion to Off Topic, you'll see there's vagueness, overlap and ambiguity.  That no doubt confuses thread creators and moderators alike.

Frequently moderators interfere with a thread (re-parents it) based on what seems to be purely idiosyncratic subjective interpretation, that applies some standard to the forum that is not stated. which is really uncool and unfair to the posters, and just seems like pointless authoritarianism.

It could be avoided by wording the purpose of a forum better. What assumptions are being superimposed over the stated purpose of these groups that warrants the actions taken when a thread is within the guidlines but moved anyway?  And why don't we have any way or remediating an arbitrary decision like that if it can be shown to be unfair and in error?

The drag queen topic is about a chess game, with a .pgn and annotations.  I do not understand why it would be in 'off topic'.

It really seems to come down to that.  Based on some of the threads I've seen moved, it is clear it isn't determined accurately, whether the thread fits the description of the forum, it's just whether someone with power liked it or not.
