Can you force a bot to take back a move?

When I'm learning a variation, I like to test out my feel for it by playing a few games against bots that are already set up at move 3 or 4.

I find analyzing those games to be very educational for me.  (And the bot never minds that I play the whole thing out, so as to practice my end game ;-) )

But sometimes the bot will play a really dumb move, and I wish I could say: take that back, play something better!

Is there a way to do that?

(Or is the answer to just play against a higher rated bot?)

There are chess engines out there with variable elo ratings that you can use with custom software. The chess com bots are for casual practice but if you're looking for more control thats probably your best bet.

If you're talking about the bots here, depends on which mode you're playing. In Challenge mode, no. In Friendly you can take back your move up to three times, and in Assisted you can take back more and take back the bot's moves. There is no guarantee they'll play something different though.

Thanks -- can you suggest any?  (I'm not being lazy I have an excuse -- read on!)

I'm an old timer that's been away from chess for nearly 50 years.  I just jumped in a month or two ago (I caught the bug while watching Queen's Gambit), and I'm blown away by what's available to chess players these days.  Back in my day, all we had were a few books (if your local library had them) and Chess Life & Review.

So, while I'm fairly computer literate, I'm very ignorant about what's out there and how to use them.  (I still can't believe that chess engines that are much stronger then the world champion are free, on-line, and some even opensource).  I see I can download Stockfish 13, but engines need GUI's, and (again) I have no idea what's out there -- just looking for something user-friendly.  I don't need all kinds of bells and whistles (I'm not preparing new openings for a match or anything!)

(I did download PNG Chessbook.  I enjoy annotating my own games and being able to make PDF's out of them with diagrams.  OTOH, there are some parts that are limited.  (It's powered by Stockfish 8 I believe, but that's not the main point of such an app).

Ahh . . . I didn't realize that.

"There's no guarantee they'll play something different" -- good point!
