If anyone has done this please post your experiences, as I’m considering it. I’m not sure it practically matters??? Example: a 40 move game it only results in a little over 3 minutes per side, but does it have a calming effect, encouraging better calculation?

Hi

dkdavis77
After a 2 year break from chess I came back to it about a month ago playing 300-400 points below my old rating. I tried using 10 minute and 15/10 to get my rating back up quick, but found my chess intuition was seemingly gone. I swapped over to 30 minute games and it’s helped a lot. I’ve actually found though that 30 minutes is not enough time. I often times don’t have enough for an end game or a good calculation will take me 5 minutes when it gets to a critical position and I end up rushing the calculation because I worry about clock management. If I had time in the day I would totally bump up to 60 minutes. Once I switched to 30 minute games I’ve been winning about 75% of my games. I’ve been studying a lot as well though too.

Yes, in my experience changing to slower controls helps....10-0 was giving me anxiety, so I started daily tournaments. That helped me get more comfortable. Then I went over to 15-10 and now I got my "chess legs". Gonna get Legend league in about 1 hour. GL!

I do believe that 30 mn is the most enjoyable format at our level, as it allows more thinking during mid game. Even tho you won't use these 30 mn every game, it is appreciable to be able to spend 5 mn on a move when required. Having learned chess from scratch recently, I don't regret choosing long time controls to slowly improve the way I play.

Hi! From my experience, 15|10 is the best rapid time control. It will be a lot harder to find a 30|0 game as the time control is not as popular as the alternatives. Although it may seem calming, the game might come to a time scramble at the very end. Without increment, a game could be decided by this portion alone.

Hi

Slower time control is always better unless you have attention problems or don't have the time to do it in general.

At the end of the day, it's all about personal preference. You should find your own time control that you can think comfortably at, yet not get bored.
