Chess 960 time limit

It is unfortunate that the default option for all variants is 3 0. 10 0 is MUCH better for 960, as seen by the tournaments run with that time control. It is impossible to get matched for 10 0   chess 960. It would be nice to follow up on the success of the FR world championship.

I imagine that the 3 minute default option was selected based on popularity. You want to inconvenience all the 3 minute players?

It looks like you won the 10 0 960 tournament on Friday night. It looks like they are offered every four hours.

That's not a bad option until chess960 gets more popular.

Not sure why its necessary to make this personal. 3 min is simply not the best option for 960. You have a lot to figure out, from opening strategy to imagining strategic positions. At 3 min it is largely making single 'best' moves, not formulating strategic plans. 960 is a marvelous game, but it takes a little time. Watching So and Carlsen and Nepo and all play it in the FR WC demonstrated how it is based more on an understanding of chess and less on playing it safe in one's tired, tried and true opening strategies .It was a reasonable suggestion, I believe worthy of consideration. As for the tournaments -  a 5 rd 10-0 tourney means a commitment of over an hour and a half. A lot of people don't often wish to make that commitment.

I wasn't trying to make it personal. You claimed it was better but provided no reasoning other than personal preference.

I just wondered if you had played a lot of 960 and saw that you had won the tournament the other night. I would think that those tournaments would be a good place to find people to play regularly at the 10 minute time control. Perhaps you could even make a club of 960 players.

That would seem to me to be an easier option than trying to make more people play more 10 minute 960 games by changing the default time control. Presumably, if it is "better", they can come to that conclusion by themselves.

Fair enough. I am not familiar enough with communication on chess.com to work on setting up a group, presumably there already are some. And yes, I realize that in general 3 0 makes sense for most variants (looking for a game choose 3 0 is kind of a self fulfilling prophecy), and it is hard to make the standard for one different. Still, I would argue 10 0 makes 960 an interesting challenging exercise, 3 0 is just pretty silly, since there is no time to even visualize what your plan is going to be.

I do sympathize. I pretty much only play 10 minute standard chess here.  I know that CEO Erik published data several years ago showing that the 10 0 time control was the most popular choice on the site for standard chess.  https://www.chess.com/article/view/interesting-chess-data-time-controls-and-game-results

It is possible that many others would agree with you.  I don't know how to reach them either other than at the tournaments or just patiently hanging out while you wait for someone to answer a custom game posting.

I just tried an experiment and got a 10 0 960 game almost immediately by broadening the range I would play to infinite on either side.
