Chess.com SPYWARE infestation!

The last few days, when I log into Chess.com, my CPU Usage goes haywire!!   It maxes out between 85 to 100%  It's so bad, I can't move the chess pcs!

When I log out, my CPU drops down to normal, 1 - 2%.

This says one thing to me, SPYWARE.

I've seen this type of reaction before.  I know chess.com is scanning my system while I play chess.

It's those dam "We don't use your info" pop ups that pop up daily.  I clicked on one once, and that's how they load the spyware into your system.

If you are reading this chess.com REMOVE THE SPYWARE.  IF NOT I'M GOING TO SUBMIT FORMAL COMPLAINTS TO THE FCC AND YOUR HOST SERVERS.

So im clear on this.

YOU clicked on an ad?

YOU haven't cleaned your PC, to remove the malware?

It is most likely a misbehaving advertisement. The site uses a third party provider for ads. If you notice it on particular ads, you can report them:

No, I never click on ads.    I accidentally clicked on the Chess.com pop up at the bottom of the screen.   You know the one, it's a long white rectangular banner...says....  "we don't share your info..."  they shove that banner in your face everyday, every few minutes.

I ran malware... couldn't find it.  But I know it's there.  I know the symptoms of having a spyware bot in my computer.  I can't prove chess.com, but I know it's chess.com because it's when I log in.  Right after logging out and staying on the chess.com page, my cpu calms down.  It's only when I log in.   I'm 100% convinced they are scanning computers while we play chess.

I don't know man. My computer runs perfectly fine.

mudman10

well, I'm sure in the next few days people might start noticing.  My other computer is slower, and I notice it right away.  Problem is, most people have fast computers and wouldn't notice the drain.   On my fast computer, I have no problems caz I never clicked on that dam banner.  I've seen it so many times I knew exactly what it was.  click bait to install a spyware bot.  It's big business. It's the new gold rush.  Data.

I run 2 ad blockers, script blocker and alls fine here.

People have a misconception that you have to click on a bad ad to be the victim of a malvertising attack. Not true!

It's odd the the cpu only goes nuts when you're on Chess.com. Other than that, I would have suspected a bitcoin miner, lol.

Yeah, I'd start with cleaning your system (try flushing your browser cache first), but I'd also install adblockers/scriptblockers. Start with uBlock Origin.

Yeah. Chess.com works fine for me when I go on here

Ive clicked "ok" on the banner on a 6 year old Mac mini with a dual core CPU (1.4 Ghz) and 4 gigs of ram and felt zero performance difference afterwards. Chess.com is too big of a site (and too well known and respected) to do a thing like that.

it would be your GPU going nuts if it was a miner, not the CPU.

Please temporarily remove 2GB of ram and tell me of the results. This is important.

1st use Linux

2nd use Mozilla Fire Fox (it allows you to automatically block trackers and many bad actors)

3rd use U-block origin and add blocker and Pop up blocker

and don't download anything because it's free

but that would eliminate Firefox, uBlock Origin, and most distros of Linux...  surprise.png

(Actually, I do all three.)
