There is a limit on basic members of playing in only 1 tourney at a time. But I don't believe you have a limit on other games.

that's a great question... hrmmm.... we have ~250,000 correspondence games in progress. and i'd guess 50,000 live games a day? :)

That is a whole lot, much more than I expected. Just earlier today, I asked the same question on the Mario Kart Wii forum about how many races are in progress at once on online multiplayer. People estimated numbers in the thousands.
