CHESS IN ART

Chess has always been an irresistible subject for painters and sculptors. The mathematical precision of the board and moves, the sculptural form of the pieces and the attitudes of the players have all provided inspiration for artists since the game began . Art thrives on the subtitles of mood and tension, and nothing creates more tension in a silent room than a chessboard. The game provides handy metaphors for almost anything an artist wants to use it for : the civility of urban life ; the complex dynamics of a relationship; the savagery of war. It has been depicted in every style from documentary realism to 20th-century abstraction and the political cartoon . ( Few major world events pass without at least one cartoonist reaching for the chessboard) The leading artist player was Marcel Duchamp , who took up the game to such good effect that he played on second board for the French national team.
