CHESS SETS USED IN BOTH UNOFFICIAL AND OFFICIAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Yeah, this "cheap" DGT set has been used in a number of tournaments that I've observed lately, including a couple in Canada. I like the style, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Edit: I actually should say I *love* the style because I do love those knights. But the rest remains. wink.png

Funny because I love how the set looks, EXCEPT for the knight. He looks so plain and dorky. I wish the pawns had a little larger/wider base too.

These DGT plastic chess pieces were played in the Indian Championship 2022!
This is surprising since India is the largest producer of wooden chess pieces. And the Indian Championship and the Chess Olympiad are played with DGT plastic chess pieces.

I caused a ruckus with this set a few years ago.

Found in a thrift store for $20.

It is a Full Club Jaques set.  The marked Kings are around 4 1/4" tall with 2" bases, weighted.

It's the label that really throws the curve ball...

I love the set, it's absolutely beautiful in its original smoke-covered state.  I imagine it was carted-around a lot to various cafes in Montreal and, perhaps, the world.

Some say it can be, others say it can't.

After the drama it caused I put it away and haven't brought it out until now.

Can you post more photos.  If authentic, it's a beautiful treasure!  Thanks for sharing.

What is the name on the label?  Looks like "Jave Encoss".

Can or can't have been used in the 1894 World Championship in Montreal? The box cannot have been, since the label dates the box unambiguously to 1915-20. I can tell from your pics that both Kings are marked "JAQUES LONDON", which dates the set to after 1885. But if you can post some pics of the Knights and bishops in profile then we may be able to give a more exact date for the set based on the style of those pieces.

Anyway, what a great result for $20 - congratulations!

Provenance is critical in the grand scheme of things … but regardless, how wonderful to have a set with such age and even if it’s exact history remains a mystery, it’s still so cool to be able to bring a set out and when some asks, discuss the ‘likely’ age and possible history. Wonderful stuff. 👍

Chessisafight

Could any of the known Jaques dates be incorrect?  This is a very large set that may have been made for the event.

knights are from 1885 / 90  ,  Seems that the set is in the wrong box ,

It;s a very nice club set ,

For $20 .

It seems that FIDE and DGT are playing that “exclusive technology provider” game once again.

Personally, I love the set that Morphy used in Paris 1858

danlerner66

Stunning information. I love the Dubrovnik and classic German knight set. Particularly hate the new variant by World Chess. Wierdo knight with no history and a random design.
