Thanks, notmtwain! Loved the first episode.
Yes. I watched the first three. I thought it was very enjoyable. The actress is very likeable and the chess scenes were great.

I'm going to watch this and certainly it looks better than most chess movies/shows which are crap, but the preview does has trouble signs ...Hollywood loves the "genius is one step away from madness" myth. It makes for easy script writing.
It was nice to see chess glamourized. I wonder how many young men and women will be led astray by the series.
Reportedly, both Kasparov and Pandolfini were brought on as consultants. The US tournament locations looked pretty accurate. I can't vouch for the Mexico City and Moscow scenes.
This says it was filmed in Ontario and Berlin, Germany. I guess Berlin filled in for Moscow and the family house must have been in Ontario. I don't know what they used for Mexico City.
It's a shame the shots of the game positions flash by so quickly. They were reportedly using historic games but they weren't on screen long enough to recognize.
Love it too so far...
Good to see that they got their chess facts right. Nothing more annoying than chess/sport movies where it is obvious that the author and actors don't have a clue what they are talking about...
I just paused when it showed the glimpses of the board. First chess tv series I've watched, and I binged through like 4 episodes so far.
If they included Fischer, she would have to get past him first, as the 60s were Fischer's time. So I think she kind of represents Fischer... There are many parallels:
- an American chess prodigy in the 50-60s who eventually beats the Russians
- being on her own and socially awkward
- playing the Sicilian with Black and the Bc4-Sozin with White
I doubt I'll watch it. I don't think sports in general work well as the subject of drama. I'd prefer to watch a documentary on Judit Polgar, I think.
Fisher and Murphy?

Kaspitov and Karpalov were in attendance at the memorial service, and Capablancho gave the eulogy. Smylesolve was nowhere to be found.
I watched the credits and saw Kasparov and Pandolfini listed as consultants but on the next title Iepe Rubingh and John-Paul Atkinson were listed as on-set chess consultants. Rubingh was the founder of Chess Boxing. He died in May. I wonder what his involvement was.
I found a listing for a Paul Atkinson as a FIDE arbiter.
I really enjoyed the show. I already finished. I only wish they gave more screen time to the actual board during the games, but regardless, it is one of my favorite shows now.
I truly think that "The Queen's Gambit" is one of my favorite shows on Netflix this year. It's so inspirational, and the main character is awesome. I adore and admire her, even if it's fiction. Also, the fact that chess is becoming more popular is pretty amazing, just because of more recognition. Please do watch it! It'll definitely change your mind on some aspects of chess, and make you feel like you might need to do a little more...
I watched the whole series--best movie on chess ever! It was wonderful! I am old enough to remember the time period. I also loved the magazine "Chess Review"
I just watched the trailer for the first time.
I haven't seen any of the actual show yet and I'm already hooked.
Agadmator did a really great analysis of the last game. Someone figured out that the game was based on a 1993 game between Vassily Ivanchuk and Patrick Wolff at the 1993 Biel Interzonal. The game diverges at move 37 from Ivanchuk-Wolff and transposes the opening moves.
I'm going to have to watch the last episode again.
I wasn't sure which group to post this in, but I'm sure the right audience will see it. "The Queen's Gambit" is a fine novel by Walter Tevis about the trials of a young female chess genius growing up in an orphanage. Almost as soon as she his introduced to the game by the institutions janitor, she becomes obsessed with it. All doesn't run smoothly, however, as she becomes addicted to the pills the staff administers to keep the children manageable.
I have not yet started to watch the series, but imdb gives it 8.3, which is pretty darn high. Tevis has writing credits for all 7 episodes. Post here and let us know what you think.
